Oil sample

Has anyone tried to get an oil sample by removing the oil filler cap and feeding in a tube with the hope of getting down into the sump to suck out some oil?

I have one of the oil suckers with the thin tube, I tried to see how far I could run the tube down the last time I changed oil and I could not get it all the way down to what I thought was the sump. It never pulled any oil. Unfortunately the only real way to know the sample is correct is to drain the sump and pull from there. I wait 10 seconds from first pull of the bolt and then fill the bottle.

Yes. I just sucked out some standing oil in the filter housing. Had no problem getting enough for Blackstone.

Thanks I might give that a go...do you think that oil from that location will give a representative analysis?

Yes. Just do it after a sufficiently-long drive that heats up the oil, and pull the sample immediately. Blackstone didn't show any weird particulate counts or other contaminants when I did it so I'd say it's fine.
