EDIT: I actually use MTL, not MT-90. I misread the OP post, sorry.
Shifts are crisper and I don't have the annoying first to second gear crunch anymore. Cold shifts are also improved. Last edited by italyix; 05-02-2014 at 02:54 PM.. |

Just switched mine out with MTL, feels just fine thus far. About the same as stock when cold, and a bit better when warm

Red Line's application guide is saying you need to use their D4 ATF.
MT-90 is about twice as thick as D4. I wouldn't use it -- would probably generate a lot of extra heat in the trans and have some really poor shift quality. The factory fill is MTF-LT-2, which is basically a 75w80 GL-4. Red Line does make a comparable product called MTL.

Good feedback guys, thanks. I went with OEM during last swap and was pretty happy with results. I never did have issues with my gearbox, and it seems like fresh fluid made it just ever so slightly smoother. Might try Redline next time.

The reason you can get away with using D4 ATF is because the Red Line basestocks are very stout and sort of behave like a thicker fluid than they really are. I would definitely try the D4 if you don't want to use the OEM stuff.

Great feedbacks! Thanks....oh, and sorry i didn't make my original post clear...but I was referring to our 6 speed manual transmissions. I believe the D4 is for the autos.
I'm getting a bit of "notchiness" going into 3rd...even when warmed up. I inquired about the MT-90 because it is thicker and that it may help synchronize better. Feedback from people who has used the MT-90.

I recently changed my oil to Royal Purple. After about 500 miles, so far so good. It definitely smoothed out the notchiness in 2nd and 3rd gears, especially during the warm up period.
I may try the Redline D4 ATF next to see how it compares.

I put together a few resources for use by the students in my power train class. Thought these synchronizer and fluid links might be helpful to those here.
Using the Proper transmission Fluid Most modern manual and dual clutch (DCT) transmissions use friction lining on the inside surface of the synchronizer rings (blocker ring). The friction material is like automatic transmission clutch material. The synchronizer design requires a different specification fluid than older transmissions using bronze only synchronizers. Here are several resources that will help you with how the synchronizer system works and why lubricant selection is important.
