Petronas syntium 10w60
any opinion about petronas engine oil?
in my country (Korea), many M users use this engine oil. I've recently changed my e92 M3's oil with this one and ran about 2k and the major difference is that the oil consumption is almost zero compared to castrol edge 10w60, which I had to add 1 quart of oil every 2000-3000miles. i made a search about petronas on M3post.com but there isn't any thread. any opinions??

Thread revival!
Can get this in the UK, it's much cheaper than the Castrol stuff! At least via my work anyway (Suzuki dealer, it's the approved oil provider). I can get 20 lts for ~£71! Here's it's data sheet specs (viscosity at 40C is missing from the DS & SDS! I'm in contact with a Petronas zone sales manager to see if I can get that info). Meets or Exceeds the requirements of: API SL/CF, ACEA A3/B3/B4 * All technical data is provided for reference only. Parameters Method Unit Typical Value Appearance - - B&C Density 15C ASTM D 4052 g/cm2 0.862 Viscosity @100C ASTM D 445 cSt 23.1 Vicosity Index ASTM D 2270 - 180 Flash Point CI. O. C ASTM D 92 C >200 TBN ASTM D 2896 mg KOH/g 9.9 Pour Point ASTM D 97 C <-36 Foam @24°C ASTM D 892 cc/s Traces/0 ** These characteristics are typical of current production. Whilst future production will conform to PLI’s specification, variations in these characteristics may occur. Seems to be a bit thicker at the hotter 100C spec & density than the Castrol stuff. Atm I'm not familiar with what affect the different API spec has. Castrol specs:- Typical Characteristics Name Method Units Castrol EDGE 10W-60 Density @ 15C, Relative ASTM D4052 g/ml 0.853 Viscosity, Kinematic 100C ASTM D445 mm²/s 22.7 Viscosity, CCS -25C (10W) ASTM D5293 mPa.s (cP) 4879 Viscosity, Kinematic 40C ASTM D445 mm²/s 160 Viscosity Index ASTM D2270 None 173 Pour Point ASTM D97 °C -39 Flash Point, PMCC ASTM D93 °C 203 Ash, Sulphated ASTM D874 % wt 1.29 Product Performance Claims ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4 API SN/CF Approved for BMW M-Models Koenigsegg Approved VW 501 01/ 505 00 Thoughts? Got an email from the zone manager :-
Hi Mark Please see the reply from my Technical Manager below. Regards Adrian Reference: PETRONAS Syntium Racer 10W-60 Viscosity, Kinematic @ 40C (ASTM D445) 155 Interesting, so it seems to be a little thinner at the cold end than the Castrol, that's good news seeing as the e9x M3s have rather tight big end clearances. And slightly thicker at the hot, which seems good too for the harder runs! Although I see the Petronas oil is API SL, whereas the Castrol is SN. API's site states that the SL oils are only for 2004 & older cars, damn! In which case, I don't see why it is coming up as the recommended oil for my car (M3 e92) on the Petronas site! I've asked the zone manager that, and if Petronas do a 10w/60 API SN oil. The main difference of SN over previous oils (including SL) :- Introduced in October 2010 for 2011 and older vehicles, designed to provide improved high temperature deposit protection for pistons, more stringent sludge control, and seal compatibility. API SN with Resource Conserving matches ILSAC GF-5 by combining API SN performance with improved fuel economy, turbocharger protection, emission control system compatibility, and protection of engines operating on ethanol-containing fuels up to E85..
