M5 vs GTR / Heat Soak
I can say for sure that the M5 suffers from heat soak. Did two runs vs a 13' GTR, during the day it was pushing upwards of 107F.. Got smoked. Honestly the only time I've noticed heat soak is upwards of 95F (out here in the desert, it happens a LOT).
Did another two runs at night, beat the GTR both times. All four runs were from a rolling start, 30 - 167 speedometer (so uncorrected, 150 due to limiter). So.. Note to all of you, don't run GTR's when it's hot! Hopefully I'll have a video soon, if my buddy doesn't delete the video. This guy smoked me though.. Modified GTR , these things are insane when modified. Pulled hard and couldn't stop myself from falling back, QUICK. |

This is what really scares me about the F82 M4. Real people use M3s as track cars, but this heat soak/limp mode turbo stuff could simply destroy their viability for the track

More efficient intercoolers and cold air intake.

Generally heat soak is about air only, but I am pretty sure boiling oil has negative effects on performance as well. Bmw should have learned their lesson from the issue with oil coolers on 335's.

+1. It'll be interesting to see what happens next year at the launch in Europe.

You are right, but our turbos getting colder air helps with the hot air that the intercoolers push out on the exiting end. Not much help, but it works.

I don't see how a cold air intake is going to make that difference though, as from my understanding, the two intakes take air from these two vents..
Guess to me, it looks like we already have OEM cold air intakes. |

If you look under the bonnet, you will see that the engine compartment, is sealed with a rubber seal all the way round. There are no vents at all for any heat to escape, it must be like a pressure cooker under there, with all the heat just sat there. The turbos are on top of the engine compounding the problem. I wonder if running without a bonnet [purely for a test purpose] would see heat soak eradicated ?, surely some strategically placed vents, or other airflow measures would help. Over here, i dont think its a major problem, as we dont have prolonged periods of hot weather.

This could help:
http://www.titanmotorsports.com/agen...mw-f10-m5.html I imagine there will be upgraded intercoolers coming available as well. |

I addressed this problem some time ago with external water sprayers on the intercooler of my 300zx TT. Worked wonders and pretty simple to install.

what about a 5 gallon trunk tank ? Im not totally sure about ur guys engines but I know the Biturbo AMGs and supercharged ones utilize them and they work very well. on our cars they isolate (split) intercooler fluid from radiator so the two never mix.
here is an example of mine |

I may be wrong, but i dont think the grilles in the wings actually do anything ?, i was looking yesterday, and wasnt sure if they actually vented any air, in, or out ?, but you are correct about the heat surrounding the car after a run. As soon as i open my door, i can feel it immediately. |

so could you just hose down the engine bay to help with cooling? not as a daily thing but on track days between run sessions. i typically just open up the bonnet.
