Comfort access
So I understand that comfort access comes with two keys ... I plan on giving one to my wife.
I also imagine we\'ll set our own personal settings (seat location, celsius vs Fahrenheit, etc, etc). But here\'s the question ... If we\'re both in the car with both keys at the same time, how will the car know who the driver is, and what personal settings to apply?

Ceesar,
It's pretty funny that three years ago, some other guy in the same exact position as you (waiting on the boat to arrive) was running the same crazy hypotheticals in his mind. It seems 'waiter-itis' can finally be classified as a mental illness, with identifiable symptoms. http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=139871 |

I just keep thinking of these "what if" scenarios in my head. OK. It's official. I've lost it.

You can have two keys in the car at the same time. It senses the one that is on the drivers side. It can differentiate between one in the pocket of the driver and one in the pocket of the passenger. If there is only one key in the car, it can be anywhere in the car. Pretty cool that it can tell the difference.

This is actually really annoying. It happens to me and my wife ALL the time! To date I have yet to figure out how to fix this. My CA mentioned that it would recognize the key in the ignition but that does not always work that kind of defeats the purpose of comfort access. For now what we have noticed is that it always pick up the key that opens the car. So I always tell my wife as we walk to the car "DON'T TOUCH THE HANDLE" lol

Didn't know any husband and wife prefer different methods of temperature measurement. Instead of getting mad at you for leaving the toilet seat up she can use the excuse that you left the car in celcius (or F depending on what she likes!)

I leave my BMW and Subaru keys in a drawer and only take them as needed. Avoids the extra bulk. No need to have the key on you at all times! Might be an elegant solution for you.
Sort of makes sense with comfort access, too. When I want to take the BMW, I take the key, separate from my key chain, and just leave it in my pocket.

My wife and I are in the car with both our keys all the time. Whoever unlocks the doors seems to win. If the car seems confused (or you want to switch drivers) just press the unlock button on the correct key and you should be golden.
One awesome feature of this car compared to my '02 M5 is that you can unlock the doors (CA or fob button) and the driver's seat doesn't adjust until you actually open the driver's door. No more crushing stuff my wife put behind the driver's seat when I unlock the doors.

not an issue. The sensor for the key is sensitive and smart enough to know who driver is, here's another example:
G/F and I walk to car. I have key on me. She walks to passenger door, puts hand on handle, door won't open. But when I put the hand on handle on driver side, door opens. Car can sense where the key is. Last edited by mdosu; 12-08-2011 at 11:37 AM.. |
