When would it be possible to wrench on an e9x?

Out of curiosity, how long does it take before there is enough information and parts available for a reasonably good home mechanic to wrench on their own car? Ie pull and refresh the engine. Etc

I'd love to, in the future when e9x's are cheape and highe milage turn one into a dedicated track car, but I won't do that unless I can doody of the wrenching myself

You would be a brave man. The amount of computer control for the S65 scares me from attempting anything of that nature.

Why? Fundamentally, it is still an engine bolted to a chassis, connected to wiring (which unplugs) and hoses (which can be removed).

Home repairs/upgrades should be fairly simple provided a factory service manual can be had for the car, and the person doing the work has the correct tools and is reasonably competent.

I guess you'd have to be more specific than just "wrench on". Replacing a DCT would be a nightmare, and troubleshooting poor idle has got to be tougher than adjusting the carburetor on my old Camaro.

1. I keep watching Bav auto for a M service manual. Currently only e9x 3ers, not sure if there is any M info in it or not? My only main concern with this car is the CANBUS as you have so many modules communicating with idrive and DME. If you google "BMW spaghetti reader" there is an electrical schematic online FYI

I have a dedicated 944turbo track car. Its fuel injected, turbo'ed etc, and I have no issues ripping apart the engine. Mainly due to there being a wealth of information and easy access to parts..etc.

oh, and a dedicated track car would have no dct, no mdm, no idrive, no edc..etc. just a wheel, a stick, 3 pedals and a v8

people here have built dedicated track cars so searching around will find some answers. I don't know if they built them themselves or with the help of a shop but either way it is possible.

I do a lot of work on my e36 328i and I did on my old e36m I had. (those fucking radiators and waterpumps were shit) Those were the first cars I really got into working on my own. I have done my own suspension and brakes on my e92 but I am very afraid to do anything on my motor beyond installing an intake or spark plug/coil pack change. Most complicated thing I have ever done is the valve adjustment on my e46M3 and that wasn't so bad once I actually pick up a socket and got started. Took a lot of time and constant remeasuring of the shims though. I am sure in time there will be many aftermarket parts for things and lots of written info and DIY's for this car. It just takes time. Once the car gets into the hands of younger enthusiasts or those with limited funds the market demand for instruction manuals, diy, and cheaper parts will grow accordingly.

Doable. You definitely need a laptop with some diagnostic software and some computer know how.

same thoughts i had when the idea of converting the car to a full race car came up.

Really comes down to tool, software, and youtube (srsly) availability. My 2c. Nothing is impossible with a good video diy handy.. with the exception of complicated diagnostics of course. Though at least in that sense you have help from the wealth of sensors on our cars, the interp of which would still come down to software availability.
