100 octane is amazing
So I was a non believer, mostly because 99 percent of cars will not see a lick of benefit from going beyond the 93 octane you can get. However I had a few barrels of 100 octane I normally mix but just filled a tank with straight 100 to give it a whirl. Car felt like a completely different animal in regards to its pulling power. 1st gear pulls were absolutely out of control and 3rd-4th on freeway speeds were downright fast compared to 93 octane.
Kind of makes me wish I never did this because there is no station here that offers pump 100 and it is way too much of a hassle to pump your own gas out of 5 gallon barrels, not to mention the cost. I am also obviously not a competitive track star but nonetheless it was sure fun. I guess I know what my "treat" will be in the future. Forget spending money on booze or something else, ill just have some 100 octane fun. really surprised at how much this engine can crankout beyond 93 octane. I know dyno's have proven this but to experience it is something else |

I used to be able to get F&L Racing 105 octane unleaded in 5 gallon jugs. I would dump all 5 gallons to get to around 95.5 octane and it was like you said absolutely great. I ran 100 octane a few times and didn't notice much of a difference from my 95.5 blend. Dave Dave

When I lived in California (which maxes out at 91 octane) I used to buy 5-gallon containers of toluene from the local paint shop and mix my own gas (for a high-pressure turbo Volvo I used to track on occasions.)
After a few years out of the country I'm now in Washington State which maxes out at 92 octane so despite what my brain is telling me I may have to follow my heart and mix up another batch of toluene blend for the M3 (after I find some place to safely open it up which I still haven't found outside the track which I haven't made it to yet with this car.) BTW, I don't generally advocate this method to those reading this post. Toluene (like other aromatics) is VERY carcinogenic and you have to take extreme care not the spill this stuff on your skin. Lol..
Higher octane prevents detonation, aka knock aka pre ignition. It allows for higher cylinder temps and pressures.. Aka boost. NA motors, ESP the Finely tuned motors in the e9x M3, Would see little to no performance gain ( 5hp maybe) using a 100 octane vs. a 93 octane. I could see the ecu recognizing the fuel qualities and allowing the engine to run a bit more lean..that's about it. Any chance your headed to the dyno to measure the difference? |

Can't wait to try it! The spot that sells it near just recently stopped selling it in small amounts and will only sell in a 55 gallon drum. Might just have to do it

I wish Sunoco still had the Super GT 98 at the pump. Only place around here sells Turbo Blue, not the unleaded though

Also, when using higher octane, additional power does not come from a lean mixture, power comes from the ecu running additional timing advance. |

I ran 5 gallons of VP MS109 with the rest being Shell 93 for around 98 octane and it really wasn't that noticeable. I mostly did it to add more buffer room against detonation on a hot track day though so I wasn't expecting a lot.

I've done half a tank of 100 octane a couple of times. I never feel a difference.

I think anyone expecting a noticeable improvement by upping the octane slightly is gonna be disappointed.

If your car is tuned for 91 octane car you run higher without any issues? Im tuned on 91 for my evo as well and dont know if its worth putting 98 in the car when out at the track.

It'll never hurt to mix enough 98 to hit 93 but you may not see a lot of benefit if you're detuned for 91 and not FI.
