Accidental redline during break-in
Apparantly the DCT will downshift for you when slowing down even in sequential mode
Long story short, I thought I was in 3rd gear, DCT puts me to 1st gear. I accidentally redlined it for a fraction of a second. It occured at about 200 miles, should I be worried? I was planning on keeping this one for over 100k miles... I'm following all the general break-in procedures: highway and city, different revs and speeds, no WOT... I'm really anal about making my cars perfect and now I'm kinda freaking out. |

What a relief. About after how many over revs during break-in would you say would damage it? I'm thinking about putting the car in D just to be safe...

Forget the D and give her some from time to time, just warm her up properly and she will be happy. |

Not sure how DCT would make an aggressive redline downshift in S mode if you are coming to a stop, even under hard braking? Yes, it will automatically downshift as the road speed drops but, at least in my two e92 M3s, it performs the downshift at the lowest possible speed for a given gear, not the highest speed. I've never had DCT automatically drop to first, especially directly from third, until the road speed is < ~5 mph.

personally, I would sell it asap...no way that an M3, a pure bred race car, should ever hit redline.... :-) Dude, take a complete chill pill and enjoy the damn car.

I'm a bit confused, when you say redline ...what RPM are you talking about? It takes a bit of effort to get to the actual redline, if the car is cold it won't even let you get there...

hahaha your lucky you have a DCT....
like everyone else says... YOU WILL BE FINE... but let me clear things up... im guessing your car is new with less than 1200 miles... and trying to avoid the redline? and trying to follow the break in period.. correct? your rpm can be in the red line for several seconds as long as your not doing to money shift... SINCE you have a dct you cant money shift on a DCT anyways...

I am also confused... How exactly did it redline when you were slowing down? Sure, when I hit the brakes the car will slow down and start to downshift. Unless I slam the gas again though, it won't redline. Also, even if you press the gas past the depression point, you will still need to downshift in order to get the best possible gear, then it will redline pretty quickly. Still, none of this involves you braking. I am not seeing how what you are describing is possible. Either way, it's not a big deal, the car will be fine.

I know this isn't the nature of the OP's issue, but does anyone know whether the dynamic redline that you see when the car starts cold is actually enforced by the ECU with a fuel cutoff or just serves as a "You'd be a moron to rev this high at your current engine/oil temp" signal? Obviously I don't want to test on my own car but I'm curious whether anyone has either found out accidentally or knows the answer from a reliable source.
