Angry Holy Ludicrous Shinanigans Individual Stitching Price

i found out today for individual stitching for just the front seats (e92) costs $3,000. this does not include the front or rear door panels, center arm rest, e-brake, and extended leather areas.

so if you were to get a quote for full interior (imo just getting the 2 front seats stitched looks tacky), you're looking at $6,000 and on top of that you still need individual's approval before going forward. add $2,000 to the 6 and you got yourself individual paint and leather at ed invoice.

why on earth is this option so expensive? all you have to do is change the thread when sewing and voila. this should be a free to max $10 labor for changing the thread...

Stitching prices can fluctuate between the $2300 and the $6300 depending on the mood of BMWNA that day.

$2300 for the whole interior or just the front seats to start . it doesn't make any sense. change the thread and voila... don't know why the price is so high.

is matt russell the one for approvals?

If you wanted it that badly you could take it to a top notch indy leather shop and have them do your entire car for less than 1200 bucks I am sure. That price is insanity!

Individual tells BMWNA their cost and BMWNA sets your price.

Base stitching only covers the front seats.

Anything's possible, here's an example of Howard Kendrick's (Anaheim Angels) M3:

$10 says this will be a regular option on the next 3 series
Because I'm seeing a few cars starting to have this

I COMPLETELY agree with OP.

You can get the red stitching on a JCW Cooper!!! So why is it $6,000+ on a BMW???

I got a quote for $3,000 from a well known shop in LA. If someone good was doing it for $1,200, I'd be all over it.

I was quoted a 5 figure number for an extra coat of clear on a individual 6 coupe. Entire Individual order was less than the cost of one coat of clear.

What is an extra coat of clear? Or if it means what I think it does, why would you need it?

i thought individual is made to order. maybe im wrong but the way i see it, when they are making your individual seats all it takes is the guy to change the color of thread when sewing...

Yeah, I looked at stitching when I was shopping for my 2011, and quickly realized it wasn't worth it (to me anyways). I love the way it looks, and would have purchased it if it was more reasonable. It was 2x to 3x more expensive than I was willing to pay (I probably would have paid up to $2k for it).

I am surprised that BMW doesn't do a run of a few colors of contrast stitching for the cars people order. It would really let the enthusiast community indulge in the brand. Even if they did white, red, and blue and maybe grey/silver contrast stitching as the only available options, they'd likely have a lot more happy enthusiasts.

When contrast stitching becomes a standard option most likely with the next gen 3 series this stuff will come down to earth. Current interior is MFG'd by 3rd party Lear & the assembly & delivery is JIT. Too many variables for "one off" interior combinations. Sure BMW is making a healthy profit on this stuff but it more complicated than just throwing a contrasting thread in the sewing machines.

That's what I thought but it does not work quite like that. The supplier is so previously set with what they are going to produce for that year/years that changing the production line for a one-off is what makes this so expensive.

The new "Sport Edition" 3 series includes color stitching.

Yup - that was always my assumption and of course Technic has personal experience.

You are paying for:

-Perfect stitching
-Change in their workflow
-Something on top

Also, it would not surprise me if they adjust the prices based on how much individual work they have in the pipeline. I mean the demand is definitely changing dynamically, so I would assume their prices are as well.

Am I the only one who finds it humourous when people misspell "ludicrous" as "Ludacris"?
