I can't connect my iPod
hey all,
I was wondering if anybody else has the same problem. I have 2011 E93 with every possible options that you could get my car was built in Aug. 2011 and was delivered to me in Sept. The problem that I'm having is that I cannot connect my iPod using the white cable. and I know I do not need the Y cable, right? I took it to the dealer and they said that I need to purchase the Y cable I'm connecting my ipod from the armrest usb port. Has anyone solve this problem? thanks in advance. Ken

I had exactly the same problem when I took ED of my E90 (August build like yours) on Sept 1st at the Welt. The "Delivery Specialist" was puzzled as well - my understanding was that no longer is the Y-cable needed, just the white I-pod cable. At any rate it wouldn't work, making for a less "musical" two week driving trip in Europe. As an aside, we were able to connect it to the USB port in the glove box, and transfer individual songs to the car's hard drive, albeit very slowly and without any control.
I am taking PCD next Wednesday and am taking my I-pod AND the Y-cable from my X5 along to see if it works that way. Will let you know. CA says if it works, just let him know and he will get me another Y-cable. |

that sucks...my CA says that my car does NOT require the Y-cable, but he also does not know why my iPod is not getting connected...

Yeah, this is getting weird. I have the same minor issue. I suspected it was because I don't have a combox as my car is NOT heavily optioned. The Y-cable works perfectly though. Not an issue one bit for me as I have a Y-cable and I use a flash drive exclusively and flawlessly. Something is not quite right with this picture though.

OP, do you have Assist/BT integration? In Sept builds USB, Assist, and BT were to be combined as a $750 option. Before this, Ipod(USB) was a separate option ($400), in addition to assist/BT ($750). It seems like some of us were right on the cusp of this change, and weren't offered the combination option (which technically made the USB option free), and DIDN'T get the combox. My build was 9/14/2011, and I only got the USB option (thanks Technic!). I have to use the Y cable. Finally, there is no way in hell you should have to "buy" this cable. That would be the world's most expensive iPod charger if the cable didn't come with it. If you paid for the USB option, and it ONLY works with the Y cable, they Y cable should be free. Mine was. |

If it's not using FAT, I don't think it will work. If your drives were large/newer, they may have been formatted using NTFS by default. |

I was able to get the 6NR option when it was available for Sept production. It has USB, BT and BMW assist. the tech in California says that I need to still purchase Y-cable, the CA from Maryland says i dont need one. WTH??

From everything I've read about it, you should only need the iPod cable. I wonder if there is something else software wise that is going on here. I will pull my glove box later today and see what I have. That Y cable is expensive.

Lol, Sorry. I meant to check if I have the Combox. It's above the glove box. If I have it as well, then there is some issue with iPods not working with recent builds. But I'm pretty sure I don't have it.

Update: Just took PCD re-delivery, and my 80G i-Pod Classic would still not work with the white USB cable. I had taken my old y-cable along to see if that would work and it worked perfectly.
It gets more weird - my buddy's i-Pod worked just fine with the white cable. We thought it might be an issue with the cable itself, so switched them between the two i-Pods and had exactly the same result, so it is definitely an issue with my i-Pod. Someone suggested updating the i-Pod software, so I guess maybe I'll try that (do you do that thru i-tunes?), but otherwise the old style y-cable works great. |

It could be an ipod specific issue. I know somewhere a while back it was mentioned that certain older ipods were not compatible. I cannot personally verify this though.

Update 2: There is definitely a problem with the iPod "classic".
Mine is a 2009 80Gig version and I just downloaded and installed the most recent version of iTunes on my PC and then confirmed that the iPod itself had the most recent software on the device itself. All puffed up that I had found the problem, I connected it in the console with just the white cable........and it didn't work. FU.. The BMW logo indicating Combox even showed up on the iPod screen, and the device was recognized as connected on the iDrive screen, but as soon as you click on it to initiate play, the screen immediately says "not connected". I guess it's time to buy a different iPod for this car or be content to use the y-cable. It appears what THE TECH heard has been verified. |

Final update
Tired of screwing around with it, so I bought a new iPod Nano. It works perfectly, so it's definitely just a problem with the classic model of iPod.
