Thanks, Rodi.
I took your hard learned lesson to heart and went out and got a 1TB external drive for backups. I backed up all my files and updated the backup Sunday morning. Last night I got home and fired up the laptop and it wouldn't boot. It has a solid state drive (SSD) that apparently got badly corrupted. I'm trying to rescue it now, but I'm not hopeful. I'm just very glad I have my files backed up elsewhere.
For those of you still procrastinating, do it NOW!! Get an external drive and back up your stuff. Disaster is right around the corner.

I'm running a Buffalo Linkstation Quad in a RAID1+0 setup, and all my stuff is hooked up to an APC Smart-UPS 750.
Crazy how fast 4TB in a RAID1+0 gets used up.....

I had backed up a month or two ago, but I've been a shootin' fool lately and had lots of pics to add. Plus I do card dumps on my work PC, so I was mostly covered.
As it turns out, the backup software may have been to blame for the corruption of the Windows install. Wouldn't that be the tail wagging the dog.

It's amazing that just 15 years ago...you wouldn't have been able to fit a single photo shoot on your hard drive. Right after I got married, we bought a top of the line 200MMX IBM...with a killer 3 GB HD.
How we got by in the days of 16K Atari 800's, I'll never know.

If you want to go totally paranoid, like me, and be ready for a fire in the house, get another external drive to keep at the office or some place offsite. I synch the two external drives monthly, but I'm thinking about setting them up to communicate and sync daily.

Computers now vs then, not that much faster....
All the speed we get in computers now just gets reined in by the fact that all the software requires so much more power just to run it that we are only marginally faster. If we put old windows 95 or older on are modern quad core computers with 8 gigs of ram, the things would be unstoppable. But that's unfortunately not going to happen. |

We got him a new Lenovo with dual i7 CPUs, 8-gig of RAM and another 2-gig video card. Everything is now instantaneous. Five-years from now, when each of our image files are .5G, we'll wonder how we could live with 8G of RAM. Dave
