335 ManualHybrid
Since we weren't going anywhere on the expessway today, I just pressed the start button and shut her down, 10 min. later it started to move again. Not going to idle away at $4/gal. Gave the subwoofers a good Cage the Elephant workout!

If you're that concerned with gas, then you should have bought another car.
It's like people posting that they use regular gas instead of premium. At 40 cents more per gallon, they're saving 10% at the expense of longevity of their car. How much gas are you really saving by turning off your car at a drive through? A complete traffic halt I can understand but everything else seems drastic. It's pretty minimal in the grand scheme of things. If you're penny pincher, buy a civic. If you're a tree hugger, buy a prius. If you want to have good fuel economy and torque, get a diesel. If you can't compromise, get more two or how many ever cars it takes to meet all your needs. |

Since money is such a non-issue for you, why didn't you get an M3? Or a Porsche? Seems like you're the one doing it wrong here. |

+1. He should tell it again some time. He can call it the "story about when I shut my car off instead of sitting there idling".
No need to call him a cheapskat though- there's certainly nothing wrong with doing that beyond a bit of extra starter wear. As far as doing the manual hybrid thing goes, here's something I've been doing lately.... Hybrids have regenerative braking, but it's only about 50% efficient. The rest of the savings is in the shut down of the motor. However, you can enjoy the motor shut down and brake-savings of a hybrid in any car. When slowing down, just downshift to a lower gear as you slow. When the wheels are turned by the engine, the fuel injectors shut down completely. Lately, I've been throwing my auto into DS when I'm slowing down. This keeps RPM between 1500-2000 rpm. I usually don't have to use the brakes until between 10-20 mph. Use a little brake pressure if someone is behind you though so they can see your brake lights. When your engine is cold, this also helps it warm up faster. Heat that would've gone into the brakes goes into the engine instead. Using this style, and doing almost all city driving, my CBS says my front brakes will go about 90k miles, and they already have 5-10k on them. |

several things wrong with this.
First, I'm going to hopefully assume you realize brakes are covered by the maintenance package. So therefore, prolonging them for really any reason is just plain silly (if anything try to do more wear the closer you get to 50k miles). Second, and more importantly, you're putting a ton more wear on your auto tranny, the mounts, etc. For how cheap brakes are, it's a very silly trade off to be considering. You're only likely doubling the life of the brakes (at best), but significantly increasing the wear on the rest of your drivetrain. Any $$$ you save on brake pads is going to inevitably be spent (or even more will be spent) on the drivetrain parts decreased life. |
