E85 Injector tick?
Hey there, Thought i would put this one to the collective.... I just bought a 03 3.0i. There is a "ticking" noise.. something i would normally associate with injectors. Its coming from the right side of then engine (when standing in front of it) and quite noticeable. It does it at idle, weather 3 min after start up, or after hours of driving. First thing people say when i describe it is, the vanso. However, I don't experience any of the other symptoms. The idle is spot on, only ever fluctuates about 15-20 rpm if that. There is good strong, smooth acceleration and, i get 30+ mpg hwy. One other thing i noticed...after a quick blast up to the red line..there is a fleeting sent of oil... But the engine is solid, not a spot of oil anywhere.... any ideas? Thanks!

Sounds like the hydraulic lifter(s). There have been issues with the ticking from some engines, especially in the cold weather and those that haven't been driving for long periods of time. Try searching for "ticking" here and on bimmerfest, there have been some folks who have had the exhaust side lifters replaced as well as a newly designed head designed to increase oil flow to the lifters.

You mention "right" side of the car when standing in front of it, so do you mean the driver side of a USA car? If it is, then it could be the DISA valve. I just replaced this on my 3.0i X5 for the same exact symptom (very noticeable ticking noise) and I think we both have the same 3.0 engine.
See this attached link for a picture of the DISA and replacement procedure => http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...e-problem.html |

I had to replace the DISA valve in my 2003 3.0i last summer. It's easy to diagnose, with the engine running just unplug the DISA and if the noise goes away that's your answer. It's also very easy to replace yourself if that is the problem, but the DISA its self is rather expensive for what it is.

That was it... The DISA! Thanks for the help! I have a new gasket on the way...if that doesn't fix it, I guess I'll have to replace the whole thing. At least its an easy DIY! Thanks again!!

You know... to add to my post.. I have been looking around for the whole part.. figured, id get one just assuming that the $11 seal wont fix the problem. Part #11617544805 which is what i need, cost $234.64 at my local dealer. I have cased the internet high and low, and cant find it for less than $200...anyone know where to get one cheaper. $30 is hardly worth waiting around, i can just go to the dealer, get it in 15min, and have it fixed by lunch...also, does anyone know the torx size?

It's $180 at Tisher BMW => http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...&siteid=214672
I would highly doubt that the seal will fix the problem (please post a picture of the seal that you're talking about). The problem is with the flap mechanism wearing out. |

Yeah, i just went ahead and got the whole bit. Not worth effin around with the seal. The guys at www.4wheelsautoparts.com were pretty awesome! I got a magnetic drain plug, That little elbow bit that connects to the engine and the DISA for $230 with free shipping. Mike was a lot of help. If you need BMW parts, check these guys out.. just call. They know their stuff. Other than that, parts are in the mail, we'll see what happens.

I really like what I have been seeing on these forum issues of late.
OP has a problem and posts and asks questions Members suggest fixes OP actually comes back to post and tells what actually fixes it. KUDO'S to all involved in this thread !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!
