Planning ahead related to my next toy
I really enjoy driving my 2009 E92, but I am thinking of moving to something different next year. The M3 was my first introduction to something in the real "sports car like" catagory. I only drive it in the summer, so it really is serving more as a fun toy.
I am hooked on the M3 handling, but I am thinking of moving down the Porsche path for its replacement. I won't spend what a new Turbo, or Turbo S would cost, but I could feel ok about spending something in the very low $100K range. What are some recommendations? Is the new GTS one that I should consider? |

GTS is a good deal considering its a C2S with the powerkit and has the wider rear end from the AWD 911's. I'm not particularly fond of the 9A1 direct injection motor however. For the money I would say look for a CPO 2010 GT3. This is most likely the last GT car with the Mezger engine block which is the same dry sump engine that has been used since the GT1. It is the same engine used in the 911 cup cars in all of their variations. The 997.2 turbo switched to the 9A1. before it was also a Mezger engine.
Also, the 997 is at the end of its model run. the 991 will debut most likely at Frankfurt this fall. and go on sale as a 2012 model. All 991's will be wider, longer wheelbase, but hopefully no heavier or maybe even lighter than the 997. So it also depends on if you want the last of a generation of 911's. I think the 991 GT cars will all be running the 9A1 motor so a 997 GT car will be the last of an era. They all will depreciate, but I think the 997 GT3/RS will be in the same boat as the last air cooled 993 turbo. a classic in the making.

Seems to be a common complaint with a lot of direct injection engines, Audis, too.

If I were to buy one Porsche today, I would get a CPO 997.2 GT3.

The 997.2 GT3 is a top notch real sports car and may be the last of its kind. Seems like direct injection still has some bugs to be worked out and I do not think any of the manufacturers have it all sorted yet....Steve

Any power estimates for the 991 9A1 GT3 or GT3 RS? Will they go to 4.0L? And will they offer PDK?
I'd never buy a brand new one, but I'd probably consider a pre-owned GT3 in a few. |

No real complaints with the 9A1 from me except for maybe the sound, but its not the Mezger block. Mezger is a true dry sump racing engine developed for motorsport and the same used in every GT 6-cyl porsche since the GT1. The same engine block is used in the cup car. With 8400 rpm redline, a single mass clutch, and cup flywheel (stock on the RS) it revs like a sport bike.
unfortunately the 997.2 GT cars are probably the swan song for this motor. The entire line of 991's will probably use a modified 9A1. I'm sure porsche will make it work just fine, but i'm not terribly happy about direct injection. there is a rumor of a limited edition 997.2 GT3 RS this spring that may have a 4.0L mezger and some of the parts off the GT2 RS such as the carbon fiber fenders (very trick) but its likely going to be in the 200K range and all the bubble wrapping collectors will snatch it up. I'm still betting it may be a street version of the hybrid R cup with a flywheel and front wheel electric motors. 991 9A1 GT3 will probably be in the 480hp range. most likely price will also have a nice little bump up as well. The car itself will have longer wheelbase and be wider. some people are guessing the motor is moving further forward over the rear axle. another wild rumor is a flat-8 might be in the GT cars. I doubt it. In the mean time, I'll just enjoy mine to the fullest. A CPO GT3 would be a good bargain right now. Once news of the LE RS comes out with a significant price hike and since the production of GT3's have stopped, the prices may even go up somewhat once track season starts.

I would go for the R8 audi. I think the car is nice and fast and you should be able to find it in the low $100 range used.

Since I won't consider the next turbo M3, (N/A engine preferred), I'll instead spend the money on Dinan package (engine, intake... The whole package) that way, I get 527 hp with a nice upgrade in torque too! The only other choice will be the GTR, but I quite dislike their interior quality, mainly the lower grade looking plastic!

Get a 997 or 997.2 GT3 as others have said, obviously losing some value fast due to it being in its first years but just as others have said, just like the 993, it will maintain its value better than the 996 and probably funner and simpler than the 911s (and pretty much every other car) to come
