Did my dealer just rape me?

I went in for an oil change that I would pay for. Came out to $217!!! Says it needed 10 quarts of oil!!! Does the car really need that much oil? Isn't that price outrageous?

Thank you that addresses the amount (I.e. They padded the bill by a quart) - how about the overall cost? Tia

My dealer quoted me $220 for in between oil changes.. hah. Definitely doing it myself when the time comes. Save myself ~$100.

I'd rather have it documented in my service record. Plus, my time is worth more than $200. I've changed enough oil in my life where I no longer need to prove I'm capable.

Only true in the US if it's been 1 year since last oil change (regardless of mileage).

I have "mid-term" oil changes done at an independent shop. The dealer says they do not record interim changes. The $220 is maybe high, but not outrageous.

Just after reading the subject line, I knew the answer was Yes.

As far as the detail, it's really not so bad. If you figure a regular car needs 4 changes per year at ~$30 per year, $220 isn't so bad. Also, what's your time worth. I just got my E90, but my Z4MC before was the same way. I can't say how much I value my time to not have to deal with quarterly servicing.

$217 is CHEAP from a dealer oil change, I'd say its a damn fair price.

Basic maintanance performed at the dealer while going out of pocket is always going to be a bend over and hold your ankles proposition.... DUH......... Thats why there are alternatives such as Jiffy Lube or Bob's Auto Repair or your local independent BMW shop all of which would have a lesser labor rate than say the dealer. Now for you really cheap f***'s go down to Jiffy lube with 3 gallon sized milk jugs and have them fill it up with used oil, take the car home unscrew the plug in the base pan and let it drain (no you dont have to put anything under the car, screw green) put the plug in and dump in the new oil and your good to go at a massive savings. No need to change filters as thats a ploy also, truth is just like oil they never wear out and just another dealer reaming.

You're joking right?!? Oil absolutely breaksdown and gets contaminated with use and time.

Thats the damn Arabs lying so they can sell more product......... Oh wait a minute we run synthetic which might get dirty but surely doesnt break down so ask for used synthetic at jiffy lube...... and remember to pour in all 3 gallons because an engine can never have to much oil! I gotta go I think the air in the right rear tire is starting to break down so its off to Jiffy Lube for another super economical repair by Looper!

Not too bad in my opinion. However, since you paid for it, I hope you got the leftover engine oil in case you want to top off later.
