What impact will the new FI engine have on used E9x prices?
It seems as if people are probably going to be split between the "old" v8 and the new FI engine. What kind of impact do you think it will have on the E9x prices? I am sure there was a negative impact on the E46 M since the new v8 was better in almost everyway. The new engine is different altogether and therefore cannot really be compared since FI vs NA is a personal preference.

Why does this forum think the S65 is anything special?
it won't command any better premium or hold its value better. history will repeat itself, won't be especially good wont be especially bad. |

S65 is special. But only to the enthusiast. The market is driven by avarage joes. So yes, E9x will have the same faith as E46. Nothing special.

Not saying it is special but in the same sense if the new engine line up is gong to be a lot better than the current one prices might fall a little faster i.e. C5 Z05 vs Ls3 C6

The more i talk to people the more i realize many want a car thats powerful yet still offering good gas mileage.
If thats the case them our resale will be tanking once gas prices keep getting higher. Of course theres a small percentage of us who dont give a ish..

average cars with average miles will depreciate as people sell to move to the latest and greatest. Pristine cars with desirable option packages will establish a base value somewhere below today's values (ala E30 M3). There will always be a market for the last NA V8 built by BMW.
Although I could be biased as I will not purchase a FI M3. Love the TT in my X5M (and my wife's X5 TT diesel 3.5d) for daily driving, but not what I want for my track car. I'll have to move on to a different marque for track driving next time around. |

The E9X resales will be more adversely impacted by the fact that it will be one generation old than by any specific change to the engine, similar to what we saw with the E46 to E9X change.

This happened (albeit with lesser engines) to Audi when they moved from V8 powered S4 engines to SC'd V6's. More power, better gas mileage, lighter weight. People aren't rushing out to get the last of the V8 S5s. They are waiting for the 6's. Too bad the S65 will likely sound better than the new F3x M3 engine. Still holding out hope though....BMW was able to make the CSL (though it's NA) one of the sickest sounding engines ever, let alone for an I6.

I think we'll also have to take into account the production numbers of the e9x. If the production numbers were significantly low, there might be a demand for them. Either way I feel like the e9x will be a special car at some point. It will decline in value at first but eventually I feel like it will appreciate, the ones that are in pristine condition with low miles anyway.

why do we keep saying "the last of the V8 M3s"?
i bet they said the same thing when the E46 died, to be replaced with the E92 if you look at power levels the last say 30 years they are only going up and what was the reason BMW went to a V8 in the current M3? they had maxed out the 6cyl of the E46 sure enough they will max out the next TT engine, and move to V8 at some point in time either that or they will finally run out of HPFP units |

The M market requires PERFORMANCE. The next engine MUST be more powerful which I'm sure it will be. If it happens to be more fuel efficient, then that's just frosting on the cake.
