But the smartphone integration does? So pay 150 bucks to have it look pretty and charge or just use the cig lighter and have no connectivity. Do you think the new production runs in September will do this?

I don't know what you guys are talking about. My usb in the armrest charges my iphone. I have a 3g. Did it change for the new M3's? This is when I have it plugged in and are using it to play music... Not sure if that makes a difference unless OP is talking about just using the ipod/iphone wire to charge from car?

Unless I am mistaken I thought all apple products ran on 12V. Therefore if it doesn't work for one it won't work for others. Dam. So if it does charge in the September changes that means if you want a clean look you have to pay for the smartphone. That's just redonkulous.

Why don't you just go the BMW website and see what devices the car is compatible with. Personally, I think the smartphone integration is the dumbest option in the inventory. Run the phone via BT and charge it with an ac adapter if the need ever arises. Doesn't get any cleaner than in your briefcase on the back seat. |

I guess I'm trying to do three things. 1. Use my iphone through the bluetooth functionality. 2. charge my iphone when plugged into the USB port 3. Control my MP3 that I have on my iphone. So it sounds like all of this can be done with the new changes in Sept.
Though I guess I could just download all the MP3 onto the HD. And I agree that SPI is just dumb. I'm just trying to figure out the best way to get what I want is all. |

"all apple products ran on 12V"
No. Most electronics run on ~5 volts. It's been a standard for years, allowing for the use of the same chips and components across most platforms - phones, motherboards, audio and video units, etc. It's why wall warts are so ubiquitous. The only significant variation is in current draw and/or capability. FWIW - the basic USB spec is ~ 5v. 12v is the legacy for cars (actually around 12.5 - 14.5 v). For small electronics the "cigarette"/accessory outlet voltage is generally stepped down in the respective plug-in charger. |

Ok so I stand corrected on the voltage. I never realized that the draw was only 5v. Interesting. Thanks for the info.
In terms of the SPI the reason I think it's dumb is exactly why you state. You have to pay another chunk of change for the adapter. I would just take it off the option list and put it in the accessories list. I'm just not a fan of being charged twice to get what I want. I guess now the debate is for the Sept production cars that don't need the y cable anymore do you really need the SPI? I'll probably just end up getting it anyway. It's only 150 bucks. |

No prob, Sterrico.
And your terminology - the "draw" is 5v - is correct. Within general limits the unit will suck up five volts regardless of whether the supplied voltage is somewhat lower or higher. It doesn't address your Bluetooth request but this both charges an iPhone/iPod and provides direct access to the transport, while using Aux In (instead of the sometimes grim) FM transmitter process. http://www.monstercable.com/productdisplay.asp?pin=5340 Good luck. |

100% positive it does charges the iPhone. I have one and charge it on my way to work daily.

I downloaded 8GB worth of my favorite songs to the HD so I do not need to hook up the iPhone all the time and can keep in my pocket with bluetooth. I only plug it in when it needs to be charged.

It's a hit or miss..mine charged my iPhone 3GS 90% of the time. It has been charging 100% of the time since I've gotten my iPhone 4.
