Transmission :(

Well mates, It finally happened. I am not for sure yet but have an idea.
I have an 08 135i with all of the bolt on's minus the inter cooler.
My car is super fast and has given me no problems what so ever until today.
Today the transmission blew. The car makes a dull low grumbly sound and barely moves when you step on the gas. Awaiting a call from my mechanic ...

Anyone have this happen to them ?

Clutch/flywheel? I wouldn't go right to transmission...at least I hope not. A realOEM refurb is almost $5k...Good Luck!

I would think the axles would go long before the tranny...

Well.... that is how my trans blew in my old Porsche 944 Turbo. I had an Autothority Stage II chip (and cat delete) on that car. I was making about 280-ish Hp out of that 2.5L four banger.

One day I was just driving along in rush hour traffic... went from 1st to 2nd gear at 8mph... it was a slow shift... I heard a BANG.... and some gears grinding... at first I thought I missed the shift, like I did not have the car all the way in 2nd gear slot. But no... 2nd gear just exploded on me - as I later found out. That was why Porsche hardend the 1st/2nd gears on the input shaft for the later Turbo-S models.

I was faced with buying an unknown quality used trans for $3K or rebuilding mine for almost that much. Well... I decided to rebuild my own "known" tarnny and it was a sound choice. I took the opertunity to also install a LSD in the 944T transaxle. That was a nice bonus.

I would say have your mechanic look at your trans... but since you can not order any internal parts... you should start looking around at local strip yards/recycling centers. There must be some places that specialize in BMWs.

Good Luck

Transmission shops will be able to get internal parts of these. They're not going to just scrap the whole thing when the syncros wear out, or you bust a gear.

Clutch worn out? If transmission went it can be quite catastrophic, expect lubs and bits laying around.

Is it that easy to blow a transmission on such a new car?

Sounds like a broken output shaft, but could possibly be a failed clutch. That's not entirely unheard of on these cars. Hopefully that's all it is. The clutch will be a hell of a lot cheaper to replace than the tranny.

If you tune the car and exceed the rated maximum torque for the transmission, yes.

Sounds like I need to BEEF up the rest of the car so it can stand the pressure I am putting on .it. Thanks for all of your comments. The car cool down and I went to drive it later last night. It seems to be ok now but I am going to baby it and get it looked at. Will prob be real easy on it until. I can re-inforce where I need to.... thanks again. that was a close call.

It seems to be fine now.

How were you driving when it happened?
Did your mechanic say anything about it?

If there was something seriously wrong with his transmission, I don't think it would of just started working properly. Maybe it is the fuel pump?

Having had manuals on ALL of my performance cars, and now the DCT on the 135i this is the first question i asked the dealer when i was considering DCT because i eventually wanted to boost HP/TQ fairly soon, and did not want to stress the tranny...The answer i was given is the transmission should handle 420-450tq as this is the exact trans that is in the 335D diesel WITH WELL OVER 400TQ. Also it seems many of the "fastest" quarter mile 135i cars are DCT as well and many are pushing high HP/TQ number well above 400...

I think you're right. The auto they're using in the 135i seems to be holding up just fine, and it's probably overbuilt for the stock power levels.
