How to set shift mode D3 at engine start

Hello,
this week I've replaced my 330CD with a brand new M3 DCT, SSII with red interior (2010 model, ordered on november 2009 the 1st).

I've seen that every time I start the engine the shift mode is set automatically to D2 (it's said in the manual too); does someone know how to let the car "remind" the latest setting used at the next start or just change the default one? I'd like to set it at D3 or D4.

Thank you

Sorry, the default start-up mode is not configurable. In Europe, it's D2. On this side it's S3. Nobody seems to know why. It should be either a configurable default or it should remember what it was last, like other settings in key memory. The funny thing is, in Europe, if you go to S mode after starting, it will go to whatever level of S you had it in last. In America, if you go to D mode after starting, it will go to whatever level of D you had it in last.

Hello,
thank you for the reply.

I'll ask to my dealer if they can configure this setting with their tools.

Thank you!

the drive setting remembers the last setting you used, so if you shut the car down in D3 it stays in D3 the next time you start it up

That IS odd.

So, in America:
-Always starts in S3
-Remembers previous D setting but in S mode, it always starts in S3 regardless of previous S setting used.

In Europe:
-Always starts in D2
-Remembers previous S setting but in D mode, it always starts in D2 regardless of previous D setting used (exact opposite of American cars)

Strange, BMW, very strange.

I'm sure there is some logic behind this. Flawed logic.

That's only in North America and only after putting it in D mode after startup, as I explained in my previous post. OP is in Europe.

You got it. Agreed, very strange. I would love to know the reasoning behind all this.
Since I never use D mode, I actually wish we were like the Euros. I know it sounds backwards, but if my car always started in D that would be fine with me because it would automatically revert to S mode the first time I initiate a shift, which is something I would do anyway, so it's not like I would have to do anything different than I already do. Then at least I would be in whatever S mode level I left it in last.

Good point. I guess it really doesn't matter that it starts in D for us because the first manual shift reverts to S mode. But it sure would be nice if the S mode remembered the previous setting (esp if you prefer a setting like S4 or S5 for the rev-matched downshifts). I have used D for the most part thus far but I am trying to make a habit of using the S modes more. I'm sure that the S3 default will start bugging me more and more because I will want the rev matching.

I've noticed this too and it makes no sense. Even the E46 I had with SMG remembered the last shift setting when I started the car. Just a small thing I guess they didn't think of.............................but it is a bit annoying.

Can be easily fixed with a software update...just wonder if they will ever do it. Probably not.

The reason it doesn't remember the shift mode, IMHO is pure marketing. It makes the M button seem that much more magical.
