Question shifting with DCT, whats the proper way?

i know, this question is not as dumb as you guys might think, but i was told by a friend of mine that when shifting the gear knob from R -> N -> D i should pause for 3 second from R -> N then another 3 second N -> D because the car that click sound when the gear is engaging, and that failure to do so would fuck up the transition, is this true? i honestly thought it was the dumbest thing i have ever heard, but i thought I'd check with you guy for confirmation. since when i reverse i go from R N D in one shot. i did the same with my SMG M5 and never had a problem. so i just wanna be on the safe side and ask you guys, is this true?

I don't pause at all when changing from reverse and back. Often times the car keeps rolling (albeit at very slow speeds). The manual recommends that you come to a full-stop, but I'm sure it's fine. That's how I transitioned from reverse in my previous two manual cars. A three-second pause sounds a bit unnecessary.

Go with your first instinct.
When I'm done backing up, I pop the lever out of reverse and into S mode in one motion while brushing the brake pedal without necesarily coming to a complete stop, then give it a little gas and it stops rolling back and starts forward... just like most drivers do with automatics or manuals. I'm not saying this is the proper thing to do, but after awhile it just became the way I did it, kind of without thinking about it, again, much like you would do in a manual. I don't see how it would be damaging in any way, in fact, if it was, it wouldn't allow it. Yes, the book says to come to a complete stop, blah blah blah, but so does every book for every car no matter what kind of transmission it has. There is a software requirement that the brake pedal be pressed in order to put it in gear, but like I said, that can be met by just brushing the brake pedal. In any case, the short answer to your question is no, there is no 3 second pause requirement.

I know this is an old thread but my question is...

Is the clicking sound changing to N -> R and back normal? I just picked up my car last week. I drove e46 M3 with SMG for a while and never experience this before. That clicking sound makes me feel like its about to break. Does everyone else experiece this?

It's normal.

I sometimes turn off the car with shift knob engaged in R
My tranny is still fine and smooth as silk.

Your friend must take forever to parallel park in a tight space.

Reverse. Stop. Pause three second. Slip into drive. Inch forward. Stop. Pause three second. Reverse. Inch backwards. Stop. Pause three seconds ....

When you change gears from R to forward... is it supposed to go into D or S mode? Mine usually goes into D but sometimes into S.

it depends on the last mode you left it in before switching out of gear, if it's 1st time starting the car with a US spec vehicle it goes into S3 by default...also, the car is smart enough to slip the clutch or not engage the gear until it is safe to do so, don't worry about it

In the past I would have told you were completely mistaken.

But, ever since I have gotten the new software, mine has begun doing the same thing. Of course, I cannot be sure that the new software is the culprit. It could be that this particular switching mechanism in the shifter is wearing out and is now registering twice when I only move the shifter once. At first I thought I was crazy but its happening more than 50% of the time.

I have been debating starting a seperate thread about this - maybe I should.

Start one. I've noticed that when I go from R to forward... it goes to D (maybe b/c that is the last mode I'm in). But if I start the car and want to go forward... it goes into S mode. I have to hit it twice to get D. Strange.

I have a question. Is there a way to engage P when you come to a stop, say in your driveway? If Im not shutting off car and I want to run into the house or the garage or something, Ive been engaging N and pulling up e-brake. Is there another alternative Im not aware of?

i am wondering why sometimes when i started the car up and then reverse the car out then put it into drive, why it sometimes it is in s1 and sometimes it starts out in d1? i never put the car into s mode since its in break in. but it is really confusing cause randomly it will be in s mode and then i come back and start the car over again its in d mode?

You don't even have to engage it in N. Just pull the hand brake and open the door. It automatically goes into N while iDrive tells you "caution"
