Clanging/shuddering noise at shut down/turn off- solved (Park car in gear)
Took delivery of my 1er with 1 mile on the odometer yesterday afternoon in Spartanburg. No problems on the drive home. I was careful not to go above 4500 RPM. No full throttle. I was even slowing down to 40 on the highway to smoothly bring it up from 2000 to 4000 RPM and through a few gears. I made sure not to run the car at the same RPM for too long. I thought everything was fine, but today I'm noticing a more a more prevalent clanging noise when I turn off the ignition. Anybody else experienced this?

Also, I am positive it's not just the car snap/crackle/pop-ing while cooling down. My dad's Cayman S does that a lot so I'm very familiar with that sound. |

In the cars user manual, it states to shut off the car in 1st or reverse. I know the exact sound you are talking about, it sounds like a rattling down sound when you shut off the car in N. Turn the car off in 1st or reverse and you won't hear it for sure.

I always shut manual cars off in 1st or reverse in case the e-brake doesn't hold.
In this car...the e-brake doesn't hold.

What the heck? Page 49 of the manual says to stop the car and then shift into first or reverse. Not shut off the car in first or reverse... Then forcefully apply e-brake and remove key from ignition.

This is a common BMW design thing. Its inside the gearbox that you hear the rattle/clang - i dont know why BMW dont tell people this
But its got to do with the input shaft. Turn the car OFF in ANY gear, and it will disappear. |

Sounds like this is probably it. I always rolled to a stop in neutral, turned the car off, and then put it in gear. Just habit from seven years in my old Integra. Guess it's time for some changes.

Just drove to work... turned car off to get gas, once at a stoplight as a test, and when I finally got to work and all three times not a peep with the car in gear. It seems that is the solution. I'm still going to call my local dealer to verify this is normal.
Mods, any chance you could change my thread title to "Clanging/shuddering noise at shut down/turn off" (the alternative words just to make it more visible in the search engine) |

In my g35 I had before the 1'er, I was informed that it was the dual mass flywheel that was making that noise. If you keep the clutch engaged at shutdown (regardless of gear selection), the noise will probably go away.
