135i Fog Lamps

I have problem that i'm sure many other 135i owners have. Namely that there are no foglamps. I have found a place on the front fascia of the car that seems like it would be able to be drilled and have a small aftermarket foglight installed.

There is only one thing stopping me. I have no idea whether or not the 135i is prewired for foglamps. If it is, does anybody know where the bus plug for the front foglamps is? And has anybody done this before?

I was aswell. And no I haven't contacted the dealer. My dad took the 1er up state(NY) yesterday and got stuck in a fog. We both started talking and got curious. We looked under the front of the car and thought about the spots in the pictures. I'm going up there on monday to ask if its prewired. However, i'm more concerned about whether or not someone has done this before.
BTW if it works out i'll try to post a DIY...

the car needs fogs, any car with HID should have fogs as a mandatory option, the HID in fog just don't work well

While fogs are a good idea, that spot near the IC endtanks is less than ideal IMO.

It won't be prewired, because Fogs aren't an option on the 135i . Why would they prewire it ? plus the idea behind not having fog lights is to have more cooling putting fog lights may mess that up

I don't really think they're all that useful, especially with xenons.

I've used my fogs exactly once with the 128. With my previous VWs (sans xenons), I used them every night.

But if you want 'em, go for it!

fog lamps improve the looks, I'd like them on. But on the outer corners, under turning lights.
Most will argue that with xenons fogs are unnecessary.

Doesn't matter to me. My previous car had HIDs and fog lights. Never really used the fog lights. I don't believe the fog lights are there to help you see better, but to help you get noticed easier. Since the fog is "white" and your headlights are too, you need something other than a bright white light to get noticed. The yellow is more noticeable. Could be wrong though.

In any case, never really used them; wouldn't be interested in them for my 1er.

Auto manufacturers do this all the time. Its cheaper to prewire the car for any combination of options that may occur. My dad and I did this with the sound system and the back up alarms on his old ford. Even though it wasn't the right trim package to have the options installed from the factory we found the wiring harnesses and wires for subwoffers and the alarm sensors. I'm only thinking it would be prewired because most of the components on the 1er are shared between the 128i and the 135i. Also the wires exist for that rear foglight switch that AndyM is offering...and thats not even available in the US. And in my old Merc Mountaineer I used the foglamps all of the time and they do make a lot of sense and they are very useful.

the white hid light is really a pain in heavy fog, those that say it's ok, have you driven in heavy fog yet?

Ohh and +1^. Fogs are a bitch here in the NY/PA area especially in the mountian areas. Let me explain about my dad in the OP. He was comming home and got stuck in a fog. I've been there too, and apprently some people don't understand the purpose of foglights. They are lights that get underneath the fog so that they illuminate the road so that you can see where you are driving. Very important, not even xenons on their own are good enough in a very bad one.

I dont own a 1 yet, but i can tell ya its not going to have it pre-wired from the factory. Those days are over sinse the 98-99 with the German auto manufacturs. Most use SAP or similar, and "someone" makes the wire harness "to spec" for a particular car. As far as the domestic manufactures they still do it the old way, by using one type of wire harness in every option level. To give an example, my 04 Jeep GC, is a middle of the road optioned. I upgraded to auto dim mirror, heated seats, B-pillar airbags, factory Nav, mine came with fog lights, but the ones that dont, have the wires hanging around the engine bay.....what ever my vehicle did not come with, i can get it, and its plug and play....

Not sure if this answers anything definitively, but over the weekend I installed the Euro 128i headlight switch and activated my rear fogs in a matter of 10 mins. The part is $60 from LeatherZ (poster AndyM, check the DIY section). The rears of course are not only pre-wired, the bulbs are there because the 1-series has the adaptive brake lights. It was much much cleaner install than the retro-fit on my E39 M5 where I had to run wires between the taillights, through the entire cabin to the front glovebox where the lighting control module is, through the back of the dashboard to ultimately the new switch.

I bought the 128i switch as opposed to the 135i switch because it has a button for the front fogs, and I wanted that as a 'just in case' option to have should I decide to retrofit front fogs at some point. When you activate/press the front fog light button, even though you obviously don't have front fogs, the green light illuminates on the dash indicating that they are on! So my guess is, there is def some kind of prewiring as the function is clearly recognized, but I don't know if it is the full monty and a true plug-and-play...

People that went with the Dinan Supercharged S3 E39M5 had to get rid of the foglights for better air going to the blower. Some of those guys ended up retrofitting E46 (non ///M technik) fog lights right where you had indicated (in the center section, around the two sides of the cooler).

Thank You for confirming that. I was hoping that I would not need to do much more than mount the lamps and plug it in. That is very good news.
