NADA value...the suspense
Looks like the NADA is about to put a book value on the '08 models. Anyway care to wager a bet as to what the retail is on it...or what the gut dropping trade in value will be?

That trade in value is horrible! I hope that's wrong. I might guess that for a 135i equipped as you have with less than 15k miles would get 33 clean retail and 29 clean trade here in MD. It isn't much better but a little. That would be for a black, white or red car with 'normal' interiors -- (not coral red like mine)

Edmunds list my 128i values as follows (Outstanding condition with 7500 miles):
Options: Sport, leather, power & heater seats, xenon, CA Trade: $25.6 Private Sale: $27.6 Dealer Retail: $29.5 MSRP was $34,150 without destination charge (excluding destination, I paid $32790 sans tax) ... a nice $7k hit in the first 6 months... very nice. Just for fun, here is how edmunds depreciates options based on the private party sale: Base car: $24040 / 84% residual Xenon Headlights: $413 / 52% Power/memory seats: $362 / 36% Leather Seats: $931 / 64% Heated Seats: $162 / 32% Comfort Access: $281 / 56% Sport package: $737 / 57% (edmunds only shows sport seats/wheels) Fun stuff...

There is an '08 128 coupe at a nearby dealer. It's the first used 1er I have seen locally. It's 6MT, Alpine with Coral interior, sport package, and a few other minor options, but only 1.5K miles. They're advertising it at $27,500.
Thought I would toss that into the mix. Actually, I have wanted to drive a stick 128, and this car comes close to what I was thinking of getting. I have to work this weekend; if it is around when I am free (probably will be, considering the dealer), I may hop over and take it out. |

That certainly seems like a very good price for an essentially new car, especially if you can talk them down a bit, as well. It is probably at least $5k off MSRP without destination. Of course that does not bode well if I need to sell mine in the near future.

themyst--I hear you. I may go drive it next weekend, just because I want to try out a 128 stick. If they bent over backwards on the deal, I would have to think about it.
I did have my mind set on a new 1er. We will see. Used or new, the buyer is holding the cards right now, not the dealer. Dealers who won't play ball will have a lot full of cars. As I drove home from my refereeing gig today, I drove by a Pittsburgh-area BMW dealer. They had more new Bimmers there than I could count. |

I got a $27,500 trade value when i turned in my 2008 135i coupe (8000 miles) stripper 2 days ago. I fought long and hard for that good a price. BMW dealers dont even want them as trade ins. They said they would take it in a second if it was an automatic. They dont want manual trans cars.

Sorry to hear you couldn't get more for yours though. A stripper is definitely one of those "gotta have the right buyer" situations.

I do believe the manual trans comment, though it is a sad commentary. When the day comes that a manual trans "Ultimate Driving Machine" is not wanted as a trade at a BMW dealer, then it is not a great commentary as to the mindset of a lot of (not all) people who buy a BMW.
I know that for people in urban areas, a Step is the way to go. However, I don't think I would buy a 128 without a stick. |

Just took a look at the sites. Edmunds=16% depreciation. NADA didn't have the prices listed yet, the table came up blank. KBB doesn't even list the car.
Typical for American depreciation is 30%-40%. Typical for Premium European is 20%. In this crazy economy, numbers should be plunging another 10% on top of that. The 1 only shows 16%. That's pretty darn good in general, but right now, that's excellent!!

It's hard to tell how accurate it actually is though. There probably aren't a lot of used 1s being sold so far for good solid data. I wouldn't really expect a solid number for another year or so honestly, but it is encouraging. |

It's also probably highly variable based on how popular or common a 1er is your area.

I bought my 08 with only 2.6K miles on the clock for over 20% depreciation from the price the original owner paid only 8 months ago. He could only get a Fair Market Value price through Edmunds, which was his only observation point and turned out to be to my advantage. NADA didn't have a calculator yet, neither did KBB, though no one really uses the latter.
I posted some prices from Manheim dealer auctions in a thread today, those are pretty good indications where things are trading in the secondary dealer market. So far it seems these cars are holding value, unless you are trading them in for cash or the dealers can sense you are in 'need'.
