What suits do you guys reco?

A year ago I received a Burberry suit from Nordstroms as a gift. I saw it in the store for $900-$1200. I had it tailored and it looks / fits great. I dont wear a suit and tie every day, more like a couple times a month. So I dont feel the need to spend $1000 or more on suits that I need to wear every day. So I decided I wanted to get a second one, but something more unique. So I went with a lighter gray Hugo Boss wihch fit me pretty well off the rack. And plan to get this one tailored. I got this one for $575, orginally $695.

Prior to the Hugo Boss, I ordered a new CK suit online for $185. It seemed too good to be true. When I got it, the shoulders were oversized and there was a small rip in the back of the suit. Thats the problem with online. Great deals. But I will never buy a suit that I cant try first.

So where do you guys get your suits? How much do you pay? Which brands seem to be the best fit, value and most durable? Thanks

Never buy a suit without trying it on. You can't go by size, since many brands fit differently.

I was in Hong Kong a few years ago, and since then have gotten all my suits/dress shirts from a tailor there. You get exactly what you want, the fit is perfect, and most of the times it's cheaper then buying a suit here.

I have:
Charcoal grey wool 3 button suit
Light grey cotton 2 button suit
Black with blood-red pinstripe wool 2 button suit (shorter cut jacket)
Black wool 1 button blazer

Sucks living in Phoenix, I've only worn the cotton suit and the sport coat in the past 2 years.

Theres a Ralph Lauren Black Label sale going on at Gilt Groupe. $1500-2000 suits for $600-$800. Its ends tomorrow midnight.

sign up here, this is my personal invitation link: http://www.gilt.com/invite/bbslm19

the sale is here: https://www.gilt.com/s/ralphbl

if a suit doesnt fit you can have it tailored. if its beyond tailoring, you can unload it on a forum like StyleForum for well over what you paid for it. Once you know what size you are in a certain label, you can pretty much go by that size in any other of that labels suits.

Hugo Boss suits aren't constructed very well. All glued canvas...not very durable and doesn't wear very well on the body. They are marketed well though...

If you want a nice suit...try calling up a local tailor. For similar money to a store bought suit, they can make one that is exactly tailored to your body.

If not, try to find a reputable store in your town that does made to measure. Don't fret too much about brand names...unless you are going way top of the line and want something really exotic (a la Brioni). Some of the lesser known houses make some decent stuff.

You can't go by designers when looking for a suit. They all have a different fit.

Yea, hopefully construction / durablility wont be an issue with this suit. Its hard to tell when its brand new! Seems solid though.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I agree that labels are not really important. Fit is the chief concern for me. I went to a master Tailor in boston, and he knew what he was doing, but did not have the suit I was looking for. I will most likely stick with the BOSS and get it fully tailored. It fits me well, and is the lighter grey color I am looking for.

Corneliani/Canali/Valentino have all held up very well for me. Pricey but the craftsmanship is solid.

i owned a hugo boss suit and to be honest I bought it b/c of the name. However i didn't like the way it fit b/c it has that european cut and the "pointy" shoulders. I want more of the rounded shoulders and have been looking for a suit that will give me that look. I know brooks brothers have that american cut. So it's best to go try them on first and see how it looks on you

Suits are about fit, not label. The best thing is to find a good tailor in your city and have stuff made for you.

Yep. I think he was looking for something quick and off the rack. I had several made for me. Better price and quality than most store bought. My Canalis were too good to pass up. A friend of mine owned a high end store and hooked me up big time. Zegna shirts for $50 too. Those last a long time.

+1 label don't mean shit with suits. You could get an amazing suit that's 10x better than some name brand for half the price.

It's all about the fit...get a suit tailored to your body and you'll look much better than one walking around in a label suit that wasn't fitted for them.

Zegna mostly. Armani is too flashy for the setting in which I wear my suits.

Yea, I have tried Brooks Brothers and they definately DONT wear well. It also diddnt fit me correctly. I used to go for the "off the rack look." But that was a big mistake. The most important thing now is fit so I go to a tailor every time now.

+1 on always trying on first or going to get one tailor made. -1 on buying suits online. THanks again for the input.

What you need to do is find yourself a "Suit Guy". My Suit Guy works on referrals only, a friend referred me to him and now I can refer people to him. Basically, you set up an appointment and go to this random indiscriminate address downtown that is basically just a door with "Fine Menswear: By Appointment Only" written on it. He buzzes you in and you go downstairs to an almost lounge-like place with a bunch of business people, lawyers, etc just hanging around amidst racks and racks of suits. Can't go wrong with $160 taxes included for a Ralph Lauren suit and a referral to an awesome tailor who made it fit like a glove.

Ask around, ask people that wear suits everyday and I'm positive you'll find a "Suit Guy" near you. If not, I can always refer you to my Suit Guy but he's all the way up hear in Ottawa, Canada

That's not a "Suit Guy". That's a tailor. A "Suit Guy" makes your suit. They are usually called made to measure.
