Adding PDC..?

Hypothetically if someone purchased a 135 without PDC, but has the 09' Navigation with I-drive would it be possible to add PDC at a later time? Or is that something that could not happen?

I am asking because i am in a toss up between ordering a 135i or purchasing an already built one with all the specs i would want except Parking distance control. I know on the old i-drive it was not possible, but just asking if it would be possible with the new 09' Navi and i-drive.

It has to just be computer programming correct?

Thanks for any help.

Different rear bumper cap, four sensors in the bumper, wiring, etc...

PDC is only for those that can't use mirrors.

Of course you would need a new bumper, the wiring, the senors. But the question is, could it be programmed into the car? So, it comes up on the Nav screen like a stock car with PDC. Is it doable or not?

Haha, that's comical dude. PDC makes parking in tight spaces laughable. I would love to have it in my e82, seeing as I had it in my e90, and loved it. So, do you know the answer to the question? or no?

No one needs help parking. But they invented PDC to make it easier to park. Of course i don't NEED it. I didn't need it in my 3 seriers but it still made it hella easier to park anywhere. So, do you know if its possible or no? Also, its 350 bucks.. that's a small price to pay. I would much rather have PDC then HIfi stereo that needs to be upgraded anyway.

PDC is not something to laugh off. As in 'real men don't need it'. It actually helps in many situations. It can warn you of a low curb or obstruction in a strange parking lot, not visible in the mirrors. It can let you know that a kid left a bicycle behind your car. It also warns you if you are backing up too close to a column or side wall. The price of it is well worth the investment if it you will ever need to have your bumper painted, or a fender or the side of your car repaired.

Recently, a member reported had his car backed into a low trailer, damaging the bumper. Previously, a member reported to have backed into a column in a parkade. There are all kinds of perils out there. PDC is just one way to prevent risk.

I have PDC and find it is very useful. I also have a rear view wide angle camera on the license plate which I find useful when backing up and also while driving. A quick glance will give me more assurance that a small car or scooter hasn't slipped unnoticed into a blind spot behind me. I have the screen in the ashtray, with the flap open all the time.

Because of the high trunk lid, and small rear windows, this car does not really have excellent 360 degree visibility. The rear view mirror is ok for driving, but does not give you much help when backing up in tight spots.

I disagree. PDC is actually the one option I wish I had everyday. With the convertible top up, one has very limited visibility. After reading your comment, I am guessing you've never driven the convertible.

I would gladly trade my comfort access or hi-fi stereo for it.

I have a convertible (see sig line) with a small rear window. I can still use mirrors, or turn my head. Sure, there may be times (darkness) where PDC would intrigue me, but you have to do an awful lot of parallel parking in your life to find a need. Is it THAT hard to park???

Short of a BMW engineer or maybe a very on-the-ball service tech who's studied a manual inside and out, I don't think that anybody on this side of the Atlantic can tell you the answer.

There's a car in the lot for my wife doesn't have front pdc, and the dealer said that can be retrofitted easily (of course you need to get a completely new bumper) - it probably won't be $350 though, but you can certainly negotiate with them because you won't be paying the margins.

As far as pdc is concerned... I am ordering mine with pdc because it's so cool with it showing on the screen!!!!

PS - did you know every car has photon parking sensors? (your headlights lol)

Heck, I don't need PDC, I need a warning sensor for the front spoiler. So far I'm good because the 1's a short car, but I use to get hung up on curbs with my 3 a lot. It was just the right height for the spoiler to barely glide over a curb and then dig in when I backed out. No real harm, just annoying as all hell.

I miss having PDC, probably because I am so used to having it on all my other cars, but as pointed out can get you out of trouble when backing into low hanging debri you can't catch with your eyesight. Also, this car with its short butt is very different dimension-wise, so it takes a bit getting used to. What I miss the most is the passenger side mirror reclining when in reverse, def helps stay away from curbs. I wonder if there is a way to retrofit that?

Your car has that...just leave the mirror selector switch set to the driver's side mirror and the passenger's side mirror will angle down when in reverse. as opposed to complaining about something that your car already has.

Well, no. In the US, the tilting mirrors only come with the Premium Package/Power Seats. His feature listing doesn't include those.

I actually swapped ala carte heated seats for PDC...I do not regret it and I do not park my 1 on the street anyway. Its just another pointless toy for me to play with.

It is probably possible to order the parts after the fact but I imagine might be difficult to wire. If you want it...order it with the car and save the hassle.

I am not a complainer by nature, so you have misread my tone. Having the feature on my RS4 and M5, it is the first thing I did (toggling the mirror switch), but as Amy pointed out this is available only on the Premium package (still not enough to justfy its $3.5K price tag from where I stand). I'll ask around what it may involve to retrofit that, fairly mechanically inclined and am itching to do some work on the car (rear fogs and alarm are scheduled for the weekend).

As far as PDC, there are third party solutions that can work and don't necessitate a new bumper (but have to modify the stock bumper).

It has been ordered on my wife's 135 09 Vert. It is a nice feature to have regardless of how often you parallel park. It is something that actually adds value, and can possibly save you accidently hitting something.

PDC was on the car that I bought off the lot. If I had custom ordered my 135 I probably wouldn't have included it.

But having used it daily, I'm now a big fan. I don't have nav but the audible tones do quite well.
