Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D

I decided to pull-the-trigger on the 3D in 225/40/18 on stock 18" . I am hoping that the rear tire will compisate for the wider rim. I am counting on Gill becuase this is likely better thana staggered set-up.
I know the tire will fit... I am just afraid i wont get that little bit of rim protection.
I'm sure it will be fine. I'm really happy to think my 135 will be usable in the winter. This is a bad year for NY already so lets see how the Winter Sport 3D does.
I will try to post pictures. Thanks for the help Gill:headbang: and everyone else who is rocking the winter set-up:roundel:. I know a lot of people do the two-set-rims... I guess I am one rim kinda a guy.

This is my current winter set up. It is a night and day difference. I can tell you first hand, the car can be driven in light snow without any problem at all. To be honest I was shocked at how well it in the snow...

My 2 cents..

Just took delivery of my 135 a few days ago and had the Dunlops installed prior to delivery. They seem great so far, interested in how they do in the snow (not that I EVER want too snow again).

I have the 3Ds as my winter setup - same size. I can't say how they compare to the run-flats, as I swapped them as soon as I got the car home from delivery. I will say that I like them a lot. We haven't had any snow to speak of, so no opinion there.

What I can say is that my car has a speedo error of about 5 MPH at an indicated 80 MPH (verified by GPS). Rumor has it (not from me, Really!) that at an indicated 130 the car is really going 121.

That is with a 135i E82 with Steptronic - YMMV.

Have Fun,
Rick

Good in light snow. Deeper snow with ice, you will get stuck! I couldnt get out of my driveway because of some ice, i kept getting stuck....

Well I am not expecting miracles... my carwas just flat out dangerous with the summer run-flats. I am not expecting SUV performance. I just dont want to be sideways going only 5mph in a 1/2" of packed slush.

The 135i is my daily driver... I just need to be able to get home safely when things get dicey. Plus it would be nice if my car did not move like an injured fawn whenever we get a little white stuff.

If I can get this car to be comprable to a FWD car with all-seasons I would be thrilled. That is all I am looking for so I dont regret buying a RWD car.

I have the same size tires on ASA AR2's since November. We had a lot of snow in December and they were good but not the best I've had.

In the dry they are pretty good though and they are way more compliant over big bumps or potholes than the stock RFT's.

Just out of curiosity...which tires were better in the snow?

I would like to have the best but good will do, because stock RFTs are scary in the snow.

It seems that these tires are still the best available in this size/category.

The one's I've liked before were the Blizzak LM-25's. The WS-60's are supposed to be really good in the snow but I'm not so sure about dry or wet driving which is usually 80% of your driving during the winter months.

The summer RFT's are not meant for driving at near freezing or below freezing temperatures as the rubber compound turns super hard.

Yeah... I could have got the LM-25s in 225/45/18 but they might not have cleared the front.

225/40s all around and they are most excellent.

The LM 25's come in 225/40/18 as well. I had the the Dunlop Wintersport M3's before and I find the 3D's better.
