Ignition lock cylinder needs replaced
I have an issue where the mechanism broke inside the steering lock housing and the key won’t turn in the ignition cylinder. In order to remove the ignition cylinder it has to be able to turn to get it in the right spot to insert a tool to release the detent and remove. So it’s stuck. I ordered a new steering lock housing and ignition cylinder. Problem is the lock cylinder comes keyed correctly from Germany and the dealership said they went through this a year ago with another customer and the lock cylinder still hasn’t arrived.
So I’m going to try a used lock cylinder from eBay and just have a locksmith key it to match mine. Trouble is I’m not sure if any E39 ignition cylinder would work. I see different part numbers on realoem.com thru different years. Has anyone else tried this or know if any E39 cylinder in compatible with my 98 5 series? Right now I’ve got this thing rigged up Hoosier style in order to drive it. I removed the steering lock housing and removed the steering lock mechanism so my steering wheel can turn. Reinstalled the lock housing, then removed the ignition switch. So to start the car, I put the key in so the EWS ring can recognize the key, then I take a screw driver and turn the switch to start the car. Then I have to lift a lever at the shifter to get it in drive or reverse, then drive off like normal. Not ideal but it gets the job done. I just want to get it back to normal |

You can get a lock cylinder properly keyed to your car through your BMW dealer. I ordered one in FEB or MAR of 2025 from my dealer, BMW Seattle. If yours will not do it, try another.
