Merc brings back the V8

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a4...e63-v8-return/

The twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 could possibly be combined with a hybrid setup, as in the AMG GT63 S E Performance and AMG S63, in 2026, sources say

Very cool car but... 4100 lbs from the video I watched on it yesterday. Ouch. And why is the E-performance a plug in hybrid? Guessing another 500-1k lbs for the batteries? So dumb.

Can we not make these things a little lighter? ~3500 is the upper limit of fun.

I don't think 4k pounds for a full size luxury sedan is that unreasonable lol. If you want something lighter than that, you can always get a Mini Cooper.

Hard to sell most folks a $100,000 vehicle with a 4 cylinder turbo.

Ah. Made a mistake thought we were talking about the AMG GT. The new GT which is Mercs answer that he 911 will be ballpark 4k lbs.

This is the E chassis which will be probably 5k lbs.

You're right 4k lbs for a full size luxury saloon would be a peach.

the EU regulations are that you cannot sell pure ICE after 2030 (well, the wording is CO2 emissions must be under x. the only way you can sell the V8 is to make it run on electricity until the end of the test to achieve CO2 emission under x)

Unfortunately, the rumors were already addressed. At least for the C and E.

And lets see how sales continue? Maybe put a Yaris GR 3 cylinder engine in next and see how how sale continue. 100k most don't want a 4 banger with turbos unless light weight and track car orientated.

MB is not that company.

The pathetic sales of the new C63 probably has them rethinking their choices. I suspect they're very worried about doing the same thing with E63.

Regardless they will not deploy a V8 in the C or E. I enjoyed the hell out of my 2009 C63. NA 6.2 L V8 was freaking awesome. Unfortunately for AMG the V8 sound is so much of the identity and value proposition for the brand. I laughed when I saw the very heavy 4-cylinder hybrid Frankenstein conglomeration they are peddling.

I expect no change despite this.

CLE 63 is now getting the mild hybrid V8, sometime in development they switched from the 4cylinder plug-in hybrid.

I wouldn't say never for other models down the road.

It's a numbers game to comply with Euro 7 emissions. You can't afford to have too many V8s in AMGs anymore.

YEah the problem here is not that mercedes prefer a 4 banger to advertise better fuel economy, it's the emissions standards that need to be met.

Perhaps there will come a time when the US gets the cool versions of cars and the Euros get the crappy detuned versions?

You almost have to feel bad for them, meet the stupid government regulations, or sell cars that consumers will buy. You're screwed either way.

You could if you put a big battery in there and let it run in battery until the end of the emissions test.
