Plastic airbag cover lid on the side of the seats?

Anyone have an idea why the sideairbag in the door have such a big hard plastic cover lid? Why is there even a cover lid, lots of cars with airbags in the seats doesn´t have this. Any ideas?

I also feel that the black cover lid on coral and terra leather seats might look kind of out of place. Why isn´t it matching the leather color like it does on taupe, black, grey and lemon interiors.

Probably cheaper. BMW outsources the seats. I don't think it looks bad though. Its the side of the seat....
