128i vs Audi TT Coupe 2.0

I was at the audi dealer last night looking at some cars with my friend, and the new TT 2.0 caught my eye. So right now, without seeing or sitting in a 128i coupe yet, I'm in love with the Audi TT. I've owned a TT before, but I did not like it. This one thought seems to be different. Thoughts?

The TT (2.0) is FWD only and has a useless rear seat. Owning an Audi without Quattro is a mistake. The most positive point for the new TT is DSG. The positive point for the 128i is RWD and more functional interior space. Not to mention the BMW will hold its value better. Better option than the TT is the R32 if you don't mind owning a hatch. The S3 is the better Audi to own these days, but I guess the States doesn't get it.

I drove the TT 2.0T and really liked it, which is unusual as I don't really like FWD.

This car drives like a Golf GTI but much better as it's lighter and IMO has a more 'sorted' chassis.

It all comes down to looks and whether you prefer RWD or FWD.

The 2.0T TT is a revelation compared to the MK1 TT and in the UK gets rated higher than the Quattro 3.2 TT.

Pricewise, the 135i costs about the same as the base TT2.0 (within $100). The 128i is $6000 less.

My real issue with the new TT is 1) design was too conservative (almost a complete copy of the original, which was a design statement to begin with); 2) poor engine/tranny choices (2.0 should have option of Quattro, and the 3.2 needs replacing with something more powerful/efficient/modern); 3) brakes aren't anything to marvel at. S3 has the best (small) engine of current Audis, and great brakes too plus Quattro! Why Audi USA won't bring it over is mystifying??? Best thing about the new TT is the carryover of DSG. Are US TTs speed limited to 130 mph? If so, that sucks.

Sucks if you're on the Autobahn. Nowhere over here, other than a closed circuit, to use that speed legally, anyway.

Some review I saw online said that owning an Audi without Quattro is like dating a Swedish brunette... i.e. it totally misses the point.

The TT "S" is coming out this spring.....2.0 L with Quatro I believe.
I was very tempted to wait and compare the TTs vs the 135i, but I pulled the trigger on the 135i in november.
I do love the look, both interior and exterior of the TT.
I did not like the idea of having to get the 3.2L in order to get the Quatro. The 2.0 is such a nice engine. The TT S should solve that isssue.

Well, the deal is that the Cayman S is my wifes daily driver (except for bad weather and concert days). So we keep it (and I still get to drive it on occasion). It sucks to be me
I have a 4 Runner for bad weather and when I need to haul stuff.
AND we are probably going to keep our old 1995 Integra as a beater car.

The TT should be the more nimble car of the two, due to its lighter weight (~300 lbs) and superior suspension (when optioned with magnetic ride). DSG is a huge plus too over the 128i's conventional torque converter automatic.

And with a chip the TT would certainly have more power at any speed.

If you really want RWD and/or a manual though, it's hard to beat the 128i for the money.

TT is also going to be expensive. Are people getting much under the MSRP from online configurator?

I would not buy a FWD audi. Down the road you will likely want to add some performance upgrades and good luck getting the power to the ground. If you get the TTs you will pay way too much for basically a chipped 2.0t with quattro.

If you want a FWD Audi just buy a VW GTI. It is vertually as nice inside and fun to drive. The Audi is only worth the money if you want or need AWD...in my opinion.

That might arguably apply to an Audi A3, but not the Mk2 TT.

The Mk2 TT has its own aluminum chassis and the car weighs substantially less than a VW GTI. Not to mention the TT's nicer exterior, interior, better suspension, etc.

I love the looks of the new TT, but the 128i is a much better value. You're getting a silky smooth 6-cylinder engine, a better rear seat, and a car that's likely to have better resale value for thousands less.
