I am planning on getting the 128. I stopped at my local BMW dealer today and they feel that the 135 will be significantly faster than 128 and recommended that I drive both before making a decision. Personally, I don't need a "fast" car, but I do like quick pick up as much as anyone else. As long as the 128 is as great as I hope, I would rather save the $7K and get the 128, but I can't commit until I drive it first...

I'm on the fence, but I'm a year or two away from signing. 128 should be as fast as you need on public roads...

Patiently awaiting my 128i (poor thing has been sitting at port in Germany for a week now.)
*Sedona Red with Taupe leather & Lt Burl walnut *Automatic *Premium pkg *Sport pkg *heated seats *xenons *iPod *paddle shifters *parking distance control For those assuming theTaupe interior is boring, my '95 318ti has taupe cloth and I love it. glad they brought it back. Light, but still looks clean today and the interior isn't like an oven when it's been in the sun. I can get into enough trouble without the twin turbo in the 135i. A 128i with a sport pkg should make for an excellent highway commute. Counting down the days... |

I'm probably 12 - 18 months out from a purchase, but personally I think the 128 will be the real surprise. We all know how amazing the engine is for the 135, but as someone pointed out in another thread - the 128 will have MORE power than the E46 330. It will actually be pretty damn close to the E36 M3 :w00t:
Yea, I think that will be plenty for a daily driver. |

But you nailed it: The 128i will be a great car. More power than virtually any stock non-M E46, as far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong). And with the sports pack, the only real difference to the 135i will be sheer power, $5,000+ on the price tag and an hefty difference in your insurance premium.

That is funny! I had the exact opposite - my wife talked me into keeping the duck and getting a 128 instead of the 135. Now that I think about it, she was probably worried about our insurance rates...

As someone who is thinking 128 but may end up with a 135, I can say that there is really nothing rational about the 135. I'd defy any hardcore 135 fan to explain in rational terms why it's a better purchase. In fact, if you can convince me to get 135i over 128i, I'd be very thankful...

I spend a lot of time on two lane highways, where passing is done in the oncoming traffic lane - the power is a safety issue for me. That and I will spend a lot of time in the mountains, the tubos are less effected by altitude. That help . . . ; -)

Basically, the 135i (or any car for that matter) is a better purchase because of what you get out of it. Different people want different things hence the different models. |

I agree.
But the main reason that I am buying the 135i over a lesser model is the outright power and potential to increase the power. I already drive a 237bhp 1275kg car and want something as fast or faster. I will be doing a lot of miles and want a car that can effortlessly cruise and also overtake quickly and safely - the 135i does all of that. I simple remap takes the 135i to 380+bhp which I think is amazing. Not 100% sure that I will do it, but it will be a consideration and is not really an option with the 125i/128i.

i checked ins and the diff was only 200$ a yr for me and the wife... I agree the 128i is a safe bet and a great sounding engine. But coming from a modded sti i did not feel the power in the 328....and i know it will be much heavier than the 128...but it really errged me that the 128 will be replaced by the 130 shortly (no firm date but this has been bmw's trend) To all those that need convincing ...the 128 is a great car you dont have to empty your pockets for. My orginal OTD price was abotu 34k now its 40k! that will leave us with little saving in a dangerous market... the 128i is a safe bet financial and internally for its proven inline NA reliability. I am still torn and my 135i is sitting at VPC! such is life anyone near NJ/nyc/ct is more than welcome to take my 135 for a spin as long i can do the same if ur 128

I would like to see the reviews on a 128. I know the 135 will get all the glory but for most people the 128 is going to be more than enough and will really be a good performance value on it's own.
I like speed and a 128 would be slower than what I have now, which I just couldn't do. However it is so much more reasonable (aka fits into my budget). If I get a 135 I'll probably have to stretch a good bit or make some sacrifices on options. Or buy one that is a year old. |
