Why have a key?
I'm just wondering why BMW won't use a keyless system, like the IS and G35? I think it's probably one of the best convenience features to be invented. I have it in the G35 and when I first got it I thought it was gimmicky but, in the real word it's fantastic! why would BMW include a push start if you also have to put the key in???? just doesn't seem logical to me.
I know the 1ers is about the driving experience but, just something I wanted to point out and question. |

They do - it's called Comfort Access - and it'll cost you 500 smackers to order it. ; -)
Edit - oh wait, you're in Canada, make that a thousand smackers. ; -) |

I think the push button w/ comfort access is pretty slick, but hey, howabout "voice recognition start"? lets hope not. I heard a story that some guys wanted to steal a bmw so they cut off the owners finger so they could unlock the car with it since he had the fingerprint reading system. Ouch!!

I'm really not a big fan of the comfort access or key fobs in general. I would seriously pay BMW $500 for a good ol' insert-and-turn key.

With CA you don't need to insert the key. As long as the key fob is in the car you can hit start to ignite the engine. I am not sure what else you want besides an automatic biometric scan for identification and a mind reader to stop and start the engine.

Can you install a remote start with a comfort access? Has anyone out there tried that?

I personally don't want CA, even if they gave it away for free. There's gotta be others like me. That's probably why it's not standard equipment (oh, and they can make money on it, by offering it separately).

Ya I understand why they don't make it standard, it's typical BMW to have everything an option, too bad really. For those that oppose CA, why don't you want it? and have you ever used it? For me it's one of the better convenience features to be introduced in a long time. |

IMO CA is a waste... are people really that lazy that they can't push a button?

have you ever used CA or the equivalent? I thought it was gimmicky until I got it. The reason why I wonder why there's a push button when you have to put in a key is because it really doesn't make sense to have both. |

If I don't have to use the key, I'm the type that would lose the key or I'd leave it at my office. I'd get to the train station and be 40 miles from my key.
I do not use a keychain and the only key I carry is the fob from my e90. |

I haven't forgotten it yet, because I know I need to physically use it. if I had CA, I think I would forget it though.. out of sight, out of mind.

I agree that I might lose the key fob with CA. My wife has a similar system but she puts the fob in her purse. I can't put the fob in my wallet because it's too big. That's why I'd like the fingerprint system or a small card for my wallet. Afterall it's only a microchip of some kind.

Question:
I know if the fob dies, it has a key so you can manually unlock the car. I'd assume that's the same key you use to start the car in the event the battery is dead. |
