Ordering process... noob question.

I am looking to purchase a 09 e90 M. I have always purchased car from the lot and never ordered one before.
Could someone please explain to me the whole process?

If I decide to order, do I negotiate on the price? put money down? check credit (if I finance) and work out the whole deal before placing the order? Do I put down a deposit?

Negotiate before you order. Down to the floor mats. Otherwise you have no idea how much they'll move when the car arrives. They will make you sign something stating you agree to the deal before they order, so they'll expect the price to stand later on. They probably will negotiate at delivery, but they won't like it.

Deposits vary by state and dealer. Mine was $1000, refundable.

I got approved for financing ahead of time, too, just to lock in BMWFS's "best rate" (2.9% or better if it drops again) for when the car arrives.
