In light of it all

Alot of these recent events has got me thinking....what is becoming of this world?
First we have this recession we all are dealing with.
Then we hear about this terrorist attack against Mumbai.
Then in recent news we have an 18 year old boy rape a 6 year old boy for (what I heard) 6 hours?
Then in another recent news I hear of how an 8 year old child was planning a murder.
Oh and don't forget about the kid who strangled his friend to death.

Whatever happened to those days of kids just playing with their Hotwheels, Gi-Joes?

Their parents are too busy trampling people to death to buy them the toy they want for Christmas! No time for teaching values!

Yeah just recently I heard on the news that an 8 year old kid murdered his father point blank with a gun.

Clearly that kid had a strong value system growing up

Wow...just wow.

kabalm18 and TiAg335i, I think you are absolutely right when it comes to it being the parents. I guess these days in society, alot has changed since the days of when (my) parents were raising me...

The world is a crazy place. I think bad things have always happened but with the information age, we see it a lot more. The news is everywhere, television, papers, magazines, computers and it's usually bad news. Good news just doesn't sell as well as the macabre. The world has always been a crazy place, people being kidnapped, people being murdered, girls posting in off-topic forums without posting noodz, children being molested, it's all bad. You can't blame the parents for everything either. Some people are just mentally deficient. Names like Jeffrey Dahmer come to mind.

The Global Village

I think it has to do with the combination of (1) communications improving dramatically, (2) the need for journalists to emphasize "attractive" news so that they become more well-known and hence command higher pay / reputation / etc. (3) the increasing ability of readers to propagate interesting news themselves (rather than through news stations) via blogs, social networks, etc.

I think, a long time ago, people know pretty much what happened in their own small village, news of the world tended to be few, likely to be classified as rumors, and arrive pretty late. These days, because (bad) news travel really fast, and we (journalists, bloggers and social networkers) like to propagate shocking news, there is the impression that there's a lot of bad things going on, and a high concentration of them.

The recession is also a consequence of the Global Village: many countries' economies become tightly knit as the world "got smaller", and so the downfall of one drastically impacts the rest.

I could not find the one about the kid dying from being strangled by a belt...

Edit: TofuTurkey and cryptkeeper, I like both your replies...it made me take a step back and re-think it all. The media could very well be shining a brighter light on some of these issues. I guess maybe it's all about the "who gives out the more interesting news to the public" competition?

^ Amen.

Also, if you get them all the Halo, and WoW, then when they pick up a real gun (at 8) they think it's just another game. My nephew won't play real games like soccer or baseball, but when he watches his sister playing he's on the sidelines saying things like "I should just go kill that girl for tripping my sister" and he doesn't even seem to understand it's not the right thing to do, nevermind think out loud.

its sad how parents raise their kids these days

its all parenting

i played violent games as a small kid and still do....yet you dont see me buying a rifle and picking off people i dont like

my parents taught me values and morals and what we do can have consequences.

and when i was out of line....my parents quickly corrected me

parents today dont care...and since a child can call child services on his/her mom and dad for showing some discipline it just shows that we are letting kids run the show, not the parents.

I swear, fucking media always points fingers in the wrong direction. Those fking parents that abandoned their kids, or kids that grew up in the wrong neighborhood....it is not the game makers' faults!

but at the same time, theres two sides to every story...there are some fucked up parents out there

i seriously think there should be a test for people who want to have kids

if they fail a basic intelligence test they dont get kids....same goes for drivers license.
