E87 in North America?
Curious to know if anyone knows of an E87 ( 5 door hatchback) in North America. Not a race car but a normal driven car. Do know the USA 25 yr rule. In Canada it's 15 yrs so possible to have an 04,05 or 06.

Not legally.
I can't say I'm recommending it, but you could probably just....swap vins....with a junker 135i and just say you modified it with parts from the euro car. Not exactly legal, but probably grey enough that you wouldn't have trouble.

I saw one listed in Autotrader in Montreal a couple of years ago, when I was searching for my 1er. It was a very early year, 2004 or 2005, and IIRC it was a diesel. I've always liked the 5-door, would've preferred that over a coupe if we had the choice here.

There's an E87 around town here. Think it's a 118i.
The import situation is fun here in FL lol - no VIN swaps either, that's what will set off red flags more than anything. My friend sent me this. They have their FL plate bolted over a Euro plate |

Thanks for that desertman123. Diplomats, foreign military, etc can import non-regulation cars here but must remove them when their tour is up. However don't see any. Importation here is a Canada Customs issue so 1 law for whole country. Perhaps some states have more lenient regulations.
I bet a whole bunch of people here will be trying to find out how the owner got the E87 in & registered. |

Here's a real beauty - an E87 130i. It's even in my favorite color.
Not in North America, of course. But still pretty, even though it's one of those foreign jobs. lol |

If you know the right people you can make it happen. The government doesn't care NEARLY as much as they'd lead you to believe. At least in FL. Then once it's registered state-side you can transfer the title around. I've been around the block a few times regarding young imports. Pay your taxes, don't VIN swap, and no one will care.
If you're curious, read the DOT HS-7 and EPA 3520-1 forms Semi-related, here's a pic of my car around 2017 with some GTRs Last edited by desertman123; 02-20-2021 at 02:44 PM.. |

I noticed just the other day this upcoming sale on copart for an E87. I do not have a clue on the location and the situation on it. Interesting though it states "CA - FOREIGN OWNERSHIP DOCUMENTS" does CA mean Canada?
https://www.copart.com/lot/50942510/...ffsite-auction Edit: I see its from a company that does imports from Japan. It was still interesting to see one on copart though. Last edited by DönerPorsche; 02-20-2021 at 07:24 PM.. |
