Part of the reason I've hung onto my DirecTV service all this time is the live content I watch on the Discovery Network. The only way to see it was with a cable/satellite subscription. Now that Discovery will stream it live as well as grant access to their entire library, I'm looking to dump DirecTV and go with Fubo plus a few streaming services like this new Discovery+. Doing this will cost less than what I pay today for DirecTV.

Unless your ISP does some $hithead move and institute a data cap on your service. Comcast just did this to all their customers. 1.2TB monthly cap. You go over after a single month forgiveness, you're looking at paying $10 per every 50GB you go over. If you want to get out of the cap, pay up again to the tune of $30 a month to have unlimited on top of what you're already paying for your monthly fees.

I also have DirecTV. Have had it for decades now. I'll have to evaluate whether it's still worth it to keep. It made economic sense for a long time because I was able to share my DirecTV service to my vacation home via the use of my Slingbox. But all of us Slingbox owners got a notice a few weeks ago that they're shutting down the proxy servers in a year or two. Can't remember. Another reason why I hate anything that requires the need to have some company's server to make my product function. I get the ease of use but I'm not an IT idiot and can set up firewall and network configurations just fine to get the system to work. Unfortunately there are no other options out there when there was once many.
I did try the DirecTV app on my phone in accessing live content and it seems to work. So that'll probably my stop gap when my Slingbox stops working. Thankfully, I have unlimited data for my Sprint service and they've upgraded cellular performance/coverage at my vacation house over the years. The only downside of doing this is I don't have access to my DVR content that I do with my Slingbox. But with the data cap with Comcast, I have to see if the streaming with Slingbox even makes sense anymore too. |

Where's the streaming service menu for streaming services? With all the streaming available it's not going to be long before we get a consolidator service with a menu ala DirecTV. And here we go all over again......

No to Discovery+.
As far as DirecTV goes, I dumped them after 15+ years in December. Got sick of paying per box, HD fee, whole house fee, etc. Using YouTube TV with HBO / SHO, Netflix and Hulu and paying around 1/2 of what I paid DirecTV. Plus I can easily use it in any room in our house, any device and our vacation condo with one account. The only part more surprising than how long it took me to dump them was their reaction: no attempt whatsoever to retain me as a customer and just wanted me to ship them back ancient DVRs I was still using.

YouTube TV interface is not very good. Things like playlist and channel guide are much better with DirecTV, as is FF and REW and overall navigation. I’m getting used to it, but hope they make the interface better over time. Unlimited recordings we can watch anywhere at no extra cost was a big selling point, especially at 1/2 the total cost of having DirecTV in one house.

No thanks. Too many streaming services and most are shit.
Netflix (Mooched) Prime (Couple good series but a lot of crap also) Hulu (Free through girlfriends cell plan, not much I watch here) Disney+ (Mooched also just to see Mandalorian) CBS (Free trial just to see Startrek) HBO (Free through cable, can't remember last time I watched it) I also have cable included in my HOA fees, but I can't remember the last time I watched anything on cable. |
