HUD Lovers - Check this out!
One of the things I've always felt was missing from my M3 was a HUD. The E6x M5/M6 had one but not our cars. After experimenting with one cheap Chinese OBD2 HUD after another, I came upon this cool device!
I bought a unit immediately. It's pretty cool. It's from a Taiwanese company but has English interface. They make the regular OBD2 versions, but also specific CANBUS versions for our BMWs. Upside of the CANBUS version is that you get a lot more data than vanilla OBD2; downside is that it's slightly pricier and needs to be wired into the gauge cluster connectors. The displays are highly customizable and the manufacturer provides frequent software updates with bug fixes and new screens/enhancements. It has gesture controls - you can swipe your hand in front of the device to change screens. Best part is, it works with Google Maps! There's even a smartphone app that acts like a remote control for the HUD. I'll post some pics of my unit if anyone is interested to see more. In the meantime, enjoy the video! |

Wow, this looks pretty cool. Thanks for sharing. It would be even better if it worked with Waze too, but maybe that's wishful thinking.
What is the hookup process like to connect to the gauge cluster connectors?

BMW themselves released such a kit a while back (with far less functionality though). Not a fan of sticking up a mount and screen on the dash for HUD from an aesthetic standpoint but it sure is some nice tech!

I can't do HUDs personally. Its very distracting for me, don't know why. Kinda gave me motion sickness in the cars I drove that had them.

This VEGA HUD I mounted at the top of the gauge cluster hump, front and center of my line of sight. Surprisingly, I was easily able to shift focus beyond it to see the road, and shift back to view the HUD when I wanted to. Didn't require shifting my line of sight to the side as compared to when I had HUDs near the A pillar. After a couple days, when I was focusing on the road, the VEGA HUD wasn't at all distracting. This is very different than the stock BMW F-series HUDs which seem to 'project' the display a few feet in front of you (as if it was floating in the air). When I drove an F-series, I found this floating HUD display quite distracting cos I couldn't de-focus away from it, it was always in view and kind of stole your attention from the road. |
