When unexplainable electronic gremlins show up in BMWs, it is usually the battery. How old is yours?
Does that brake lamp EVER come on? Or do you need a new bulb to swap in? Also, what year is your car? There are now upgraded tail lamp clusters. |

Look closely at the brake lights that are illuminated when pressing the brake pedal. There are two individual bulbs that light up per side. It's very easy to not notice when one is out - that is what your idrive is telling you about. The defective inner running trunk light on the left will not trigger a warning.

I had this same error about 2 weeks before my alternator died and left me stranded by the road side. Brake light error but both brake lights were working. Check your battery and alternator.

My brake error light has been intermittent for years. Seems to occur sporadically but only after I've opened and closed the trunk.
I suspect a loose connection but since the error is rare and resolved quickly, I've never looked into the physical connections. |

Weren't the pre-LCI models known for the brake light bulbs getting loose over time, all the time?
In your case, though, is ptobably something else. The error is not what's actually happening to the car |

Yup. The socket contacts aren't the greatest. It even happens on my LCI E90, as the brake lights themselves are still halogen bulbs and only the indicator and running bars are LED.
