2010 m3 rod bearing changeover date

Hi all

I have a 2010 m3. I understand that bmw changed the design in “mid 2010”. Is there a way to tell from the vin if the rod bearing design is old or new?

Thanks.

I believe it was only the 2011 MY and later that switched to the newer materials (tin/alum instead of lead/copper):

But the design (clearance) supposedly didn't change, so they likely will need changing at some mileage interval anyway if you want to be safe.

Ok thanks. I wasn’t sure.

I’m actually happy about that, because it lets me do a more meaningful oil analysis.

Have you looked into Changed rod bearing example thread? Some members say that their oil analysis tests came out with great results yet when they changed their bearings they were very worn

We need a RB sticky that compiles(links) the top 5 most valuable threads and 5-10 bullets of all the findings and theories at a high level. Cited sources will only be from those we all respect on here (MRF, deansbimmer, greeneggs, etc).

And a note in the sticky that people can search if they are looking for specific details.

Yes, I’m aware, there’s no absolute way to tell. It’s a shame. I am looking into shops to do the work just in case.
