Gas pump sealed to filler neck
Some gas pumps form an air tight seal when I fill up that must forcefully be broken. Also on occasion the pump will stop prematurely. I don't have idle bounce after fill up. Anyone else have this? I searched but nada.

Your vapor canister is most likely flooded. Some people have had luck holding the pump at a 90 degree angle or upside down. I had this problem big time until I replaced my vapor can last year never had it again. If you do replace it don’t top off anymore. Once the pump stops that’s it otherwise you’ll flood it all over again

I had this very same problem and it also turned out to be the Vapor/Charcoal Canister.
I just purchased my car a few months ago with only 20K miles on it. Bought it in Seattle and then drove it down to SoCal over the course of two days. Previous owner told me that it was finicky in filling with fuel in that I needed to hold the pump in just the right angle to get it to work. Hmmm... Well countless gas stations from Washington, through Oregon, and through California the WHOLE way I would not be able to pump more than a buck at a time without the pump shutting off. No check engine light, no fluctuating idle. Just couldn't pump fuel into this car. Brought it to the dealer as I knew it wasn't me and it must be something wrong with the fuel system and the service advisor immediately knew it was the charcoal canister. Proceeded to have it replaced (have an extended warranty) No problem since. For my car to have this issue at 20K miles tells me a previous owner kept topping off the tank and killed the canister. As EJT86 mentions, when fueling up the car and the pump clicks off, don't try and pump any more fuel into the car or try and click the pump handle to try and get the pennies rounded up. If your one of 'those' people just know you are killing your charcoal canister. Last edited by jv92red; 11-12-2018 at 05:12 PM.. |

When I purchased the car back in May I drove it from NorCal to SoCal. I filled up three times on the way and thought all of the pumps were broken. I don't top off vehicles that use Unleaded, but I will fill a diesel powered car to the brim.
Looks like the canister costs about $300.
