My M3 is done *Updated*
So My 171724 mile M3 is done. But it was not the engine, it was the DCT. Started the car up on this chilly day, and heard a decently loud clunk. Once i reached the end of my block, the car started to shift funny...1/4 mile later, could not shift anymore. Parked in a shopping center, restarted, no dice.
Then there was a ton of smoke coming in. Well, I always thought it would be the rod bearings, guess not lol. *update on Post #48 Last edited by WingZeroX5; 10-22-2018 at 05:39 PM.. |

Bummer!!! I always looked for your updates in the high mileage thread. Gave me a smile every time you posted your miles.
What's the plan? Sell it? Take it to the shop?

Haha thanks man. A tow is on its way to the nearest dealer. Prob going to sell it as is to them and wait. We'll then have the X5M for backup but one car won't be sufficient in the long run

That’s a bummer man, sorry to hear about your car. Good luck and hopefully you will be right back into an E92 in no time. Good luck at the stealer, remember maybe get another quote from and Indy shop and the dealer is gonna be crazy over priced.

Wow, don't usually see a DCT spill its guts like that. I have used DCT's in stock if you want to keep the car running.

RIP to that DCT. That is serious mileage. Let us know what failed. Get that used DCT from Dean and get that b going again.

never heard of scrapping a car bc the tranny went out, but i guess if you were looking for an out, its a good opportunity.

Curious to know what failed too... did you ever service the transmission during the lifespan of the car (ie. change the gaskets, filters etc.)?

I really don't want to scrap it, but it crossed my mind early this summer. If I can get it done for a decent price, I would...but there's more to that story. This is my 2nd e90 M3, I sold the first one because the used car market was good. Missed it too much so I decided to find something around $20k and I wanted to wrench on it. This one, title is already blemished, since it was rebuilt from a right side collision from previous owner. Purchased it dirt cheap for 19K in in early 2014 with 50k miles and have since drove the crap out of it. So in terms of value, I'm probably not going to get much out of this car and I'm OK with it. I promised to drive it until the engine is toast but looks like the tranny decided to take the hit first. Not to mention, it has gone through 4 minor accidents that were NOT MY FAULT I just did a DCT drain/fill 2 months ago and found nothing out of the ordinary. Changed the pan gasket and filter. The filter did appear in better condition than it did with my first drain at 100K miles. I'm interested to see what went wrong too so Im going to wait a bit until the dealership calls me back, or I head up there sometime today |

Well you lost DCT oil. Transmission may not be destroyed. Maybe a pan or gasket went. Loss of oil pressure will cause the gearbox not to shift, and that may have saved it from being damaged. Won't know for sure til you open it up.
Had it happen to me before on a torque converter automatic. Busted a seal, leak wasn't catastrophic so i just kept topping up ATF and drove it 200kms home, leaving a cloud of burnt ATF in my wake. Lol. Fixed the seal, gearbox was fine. |

The cheapest on Autotrader right now is $15k, so I'm assuming the floor for a drivable M3 is about $10k, versus the $3k you'll get by selling it as-is.
