What did BMW do wrong with the rod bearings on Exx engine?

Most people on this thread say change out the rod bearing ASAP or risk high chance of engine failure. What did BMW do wrong with this engine and why haven't they come-out with a correction campaign or fix like they did for 550 engine? Is there a thread w stats. for % of failed engines? I have seen pictures of replaced bearings and they look bad....

That's the billion dollar question ! Here is the Bimmerpost list (not worldwide) => http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=786615

EDIT : It's not only our S65 engines ,the S85 engine is also affected in worldwide bearing failures .

Officially there is "No Problem" so BWM has not published what the true root cause is. The increase in clearance may or may not be a solution. Prior to the increased clearance theory, many bearing sets were replaced with WPC treated surfaces. One does not hear of those sets failing.

One wonders if someone in the assembly process took a short cut, in the torquing process or just a design short coming. Now there is some speculation on the rods, but there in no hard data. It would seem to be a great computer modeling project!

Just bought a M3 and had read that I need to change my rod bearings. I just wondered why and did not see what happened and why BMW has done nothing in the threads I have read up to now. I will read the threads provided in answer to my question as apparently they contain more detail and background than...change your rod bearings or your engine will destruct.
