Well it's official...my current car is the best car I have ever owned!

Like many of you, I have owned a lot of cars including some pretty nice ones (F80 M3 to name a recent one). Now that I have owned my current car for 3 months (2012 M3) and the honeymoon period is over, I can absolutely say that this is the best car I have ever owned. I could go on and on about why I feel this way, but one thing captures it all: I still get butterflies when I fire it up

No wonder, it looks amazing. I have a hard time figuring out if they look better than they drive or drive better than they look. Yours (below) is a standout for sure.

I love the look of that paint. Are there any special instructions to keep the matte paint looking dialed-in?

Because of you, I'm going to take the car cover off my M3 and do a cold start tomorrow morning (benefits of work-from-home Friday's). I've been on a roller-coaster of feelings about my car lately, and I think hearing that V8 fire up will be therapeutic. Too bad it's in the low teens tomorrow with a blanket of ice on the roads, otherwise I'd take it for a spin around the block!

It’s been well below freezing here in Texas as well...kinda crazy! I am still learning how to care for the matte paint but did a lot of research before buying the car. Overall, it is pretty easy, just need to use the right products (I currently use Dr Beasley’s products and they are great), and no automatic car washes ever, as this adds gloss to the paint. The one positive surprise is that this matte silver paint masks dirt incredibly well so I am only washing it once every 3 weeks or so! Plus you are never supposed to clay or polish, so ends up being quite a low maintenance proposition. The big downside is if the paint gets damaged it’s much harder to repair.

Glad to hear this! Can't think of another car with 4 seats that i'd want more...except for another one in frozen white perhaps !

The M3 is a keeper as long as I can either continue to drive it daily or can get my wife to agree to another (6th) car just for me. There are few cars I have owned that I have enjoyed as much as my current M3, but I do have to give a nod to some cars I wish I still owned:

1. My e46 M3. The best-looking M3 ever to wear the BMW badge, with all of the attributes one expects from an M division car. Great engine, albeit not as good as the V8 in our cars.

2. My RX-7. Yes I know the rotor seal will start to leak and require a rebuild, and the gas mileage was crappy, but I still love the sound and feel of the rotary engine. Plus the gearbox and steering were great. Mazda really screwed up with the successor RX-8. The car needed either turbocharging (like its predecessor) or a third rotor as it just didn't have enough power.

3. My Jaguar XJ. This was the original, pre-Pininfarina botch-up, XJ, the last car designed with the express input of Sir William Lyons, and it was he most beautiful sedan on the market bar none. It was listed as one of the 25 most beautiful cars ever made in Road & Track's 25th anniversary issue and (much as I love the current crop of Jaguar cars) is better-looking than any Jaguar currently on the market. Don't look at photos, as you have to see the car in steel. Like the Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV the curves do not show well in 2 dimensions.

4. My original 1966 MGB. This was the first year that the engine switched from 3 to 5 main bearings, and the car was completely unencumbered by safety or emissions regulations. It was a bare bones sportscar with a rudimentary top, a great gearbox (no synchros on 1st gear), great balance, great steering, and a nice baritone exhaust (from back in the day when a sportscar actually sounded like a sportscar). The actual limits were low by today's standards, but it was a blast to drive.
