Bought M3 and can't start in a month T_T
Hi All,
So exciting to finally got a 2008 e90 m3 and then so frustrated to see it fail within a month! Starting from last week, after a gas fill, suddenly car went to limp mode, but after restart everything went back normal, with engine light still on. Yesterday drove it far with no problem, but this morning it would not start! It tried hard to crank but very rough then just dead, I smell a bit of fuel too. Then engine light are like xmas tree..... Got a scanner and first with 10 code: u0109 u1136 p0458 p15c6(I think it should be p1506) p0343 p0368 p0348 p0393 p0017 p1521 Erase those code and try start (failed again), then down to 2 code: u0109 p0458 scan the 3rd time and then became 5 codes: u0109 p0458 p0017 u1136 p15c6 here is the screen info: https://photos.app.goo.gl/b1hxgLECnPcdQYEp1 and here is the failed start video: Please any kind of idea or thoughts are appreciated! Heart broken to see it sitting there.... Thanks in advance! Li p.s here is my research of those code: U0109 Lost Communication With Fuel Pump Control Module U1136 O2 Sensor Heater Circuit High Voltage (Bank 1 Sensor 1) P0458 Evaporative Emission System Purge Control Valve Circuit Low P15c6 ? Oh god. That sounds terrible. You have a code for the ICV, but I don't think a faulty ICV would result in this kind of issue. I don't think it would hurt to see if the dealer will replace it under the 10 year/100k warranty extension.
So many things seem wrong that I wouldn't be surprised if it was your battery. When was it last replaced? |

I noticed you posted on another thread about a fuel pump. As Doogee would say, don't just throw money at the car. If you do not have an excellent and knowledgeable Indy then I would take it to a dealer. Or even the dealer you purchased it from if local. At least get it diagnosed, then you can do the work yourself if it's a ridiculous bill. AAA should be able to move it around for you.

Sounds like fuel pressure loss from your video. A qualified indy shop should connect their diagnostic system to the car and check fuel pressure. There is no pressure valve on the rail, you can only check it via OBD. Most of the rest of the engine codes may be temporary codes from the temporary poor running.

That is terrible.
Looking at the dash, there are some very quirky cartoons that BMW has. This one shows the car on a lift. Then there's that wacky snowflake when temp is 37F. What other cartoons are there?

I second the battery theory. All kinds of crazy errors happen on a battery that is not fully charging. Its easy to check at almost any auto place. Its a cheaper solution to suss out first before you dive into fuel pressure sensors and the like.

I've been going with Shell V power since BMW switched to everything Shell. Used to fill with BP.

I don't know if that small dealer replaced battery before selling, but I won't be surprised if it hasn't been replaced for long... Also the weather get quite cold recently, wondering if that cause the battery bad. Will definitely start checking battery, thank you very much! |

Thanks! I almost lost my mind with all the error codes. The small dealer I bought the car from, I doubt they have a good mechanics. Moving the car is the tough part as it can't start now |

UPDATES:
Sorry I forgot to mention that I tried jump it, and it's the same issue. Does that mean the problem is not on battery, or battery still could be the problem? Thanks! |

Fuel pump relay is the first thing that goes out. I replaced my pump only to realize it was the 30$ piece causing the issue all along.

Where are you located?
If in SoCal, have the car towed to a good shop. Stop messing with it or taking advices from the forum. Have a expert inspect it right now! 我在洛杉矶,如果都在一个地区,大家以后可以一起交流。 |

The fact it turns over is more likely fueling than battery, at least to get it started.

It can happen with mainstream fuel too. Granted, usually it causes major rough running before it would get bad enough to not start at all, though I don't know how it was running before. For 8 injectors to stop working though it would have to affect the fuel filter or pump (common to all injectors). I'd say check fuel pressure first as Dean mentioned. Thanks! S. |

Sorry to hear you are dealing with this, but when you buy an M3 you have to understand things are going to break, and its not going to be cheap. I hope you are able to afford diagnostics, and then you can decide what course of action you wish to take.
