Tried out 5w40

I’ve been hearing and seeing people run 5w40 and 0w40 in their m3 so I decided to try it out. I went ahead and grabbed some castrol 5w40 and did they switch. Now every time I get around 2500 to 3500 RPM I get a lot more rumble and I feel like the engine is struggling. I have RPI full system so I’m used to the extra rumble but this is different. I’m gonna switch back to my usual castrol 10w60 but I wanted to know your thoughts on this whole 5w40 and 0w40 thing.

How is it struggling. You are running a lower weight oil......

The first number represents viscosity during a cold start up and the second number (after the W) represents the viscosity at operating temperature.

So in this case, the 5W40 would be a thinner viscosity for start up than a 10W40, but would have the same viscosity while it is up to temp.

But in the case of 5W40 vs 10W60, 5W40 would have a thinner viscosity across the board.

Stick with the factory recommendations regarding oil viscosity. The people who are griping about the 10W-0 specification live in northern climates with wintertime temperatures dropping below 0 degrees F. While not as warm as Miami, LA doesn't get cold enough in the winter to play these sorts of games.

+1. Couldn't agree more.

Stick to the 10w60.

Stick to the recommended 10-60 since you live in L.A. Some guys like me who live in Canada, run 0-40 only in the winter to help with cold start-up, but it is damn cold here. When reading posts, you need to pay attention where they are living. Cheers

Your VANOS is designed to run on 10-60! Stop listening to the bits on here that don't break in cars because they know more than the engineers that made them. The m3 already has a propensity to bearing issues and you go lighter oil? Go back ASAP to a new Shell 10-60 formulation or older Castrol one

Yuuuuup.

Also OP your car clearly has unrelated issues. Oil isn’t going to cause the problems you’re experiencing.

So there is insufficient oil pressure with 0W40 to operate the VANOS? I don’t think that is a correct statement. Any support for it?

Agreed 100%.
Unlike Harbaugh's employment contract, most owners don't have a lifetime contract with their cars.

OP, if you don't live in a freezing climate, why did you even switch to 5w40? So it warms up quicker?

Why is the winter viscosity of 5 thinner than the viscosity at operating temperature of 40? Isn't oil thicker when it's colder?
