M4 or M2? So torn!
I know I am in the M4 forum, but I am seeking help.
I currently have 2016 4 series Grand Coupe which I love, but my dream car has always been the M3 till the M4 came around. Then they released the M2. Well, my finances only run to either a new M2, or a M4 with 5,000-15,000kms. Here is AUS new M2 runs to $110K on the road, and the M4 runs to $160K on the road. It will be daily driver as well. I have test driven the M2 and while I loved it, there was something missing, not sure what it was, but something was not right for me. I think it may be just the size. I really appreciate any feedback from all you lucky M4 drivers. Cheers from AUS. |

i'd go with a bigger car for a daily, especially if its been ur dream car! that missing feeling u felt in the m2 might amplify down the road.
but if u want that new new then def m2. |

What sealed the deal for me was that the M4 drivetrain was much better than the M2, not just from a power output but from a cooling capacity perspective. I plan on tracking this car and the M2 with its modified N55 fell short for me. Another reason I chose the m4 was the aesthetics; there are much more attractive materials and design used on the exterior such as the CF roof, sculpted hood, and a sleeker side profile that made the m4 a car that I enjoy looking at much more than the M2. Don't get me wrong, the M2 is a great looking car. However it lacks the presence that the M4 has for me. Lastly, I really like the interior and tech more of the M4. BMWs have never been cars with incredible interiors. However the design and build on the M2 is just not comparable to the M4. You'll miss things such as the HUD, merino leather, and functional pieces such as the M1 and M2 buttons. For the reasons listed above, the M4 just feels like a much more serious engineering exercise than the M2. For me, that was worth the extra money; due to the fact that M2 isn't discounted as much, the price gap was not as big as one may think. Hope this helps with your decision! At the end of the day, really can't go wrong with either car. |

Another vote for the M4, mainly surrounding the daily drive side of things. You should be able to push a decent deal atm also.
We just came back from a trip down to Vic, two mountain bikes, golf clubs and gear inside the M4.... that's a versatile car! |

I’ve owned a low optioned 2015 F80 and I have a low optioned 2018 F80 M3 on order. The most important features for me is aesthetics, practicality, and performance. Not in a specific order but I need do four doors being this is my daily driver. I’ll have to say if I didn’t need four doors I’d pick an M2 without question.
I don’t care too much about the interior features and the M2 has plenty for my needs. Although, I wish they had better seats and offered individual colors. To me the M2 looks better than the M4 as it’s more aggressive and I have a hard time telling the difference between a a regular 4 series and an M4. In my opinion to make a an M4 look good it needs a lot of work. The M2 looks like a newer E46 and doesn’t need much to have a special presence. Lastly, I track quite often and continue to see M2’s be the superior performing car. They are absolute track weapons. Good luck OP. |

I was reading up on the m2 and it seems some owners are working through cel/limp mode issues when at the track. The going hypothesis seems to be LPFP/fuel starvation issues.
I'd personally wait for those to be sorted before getting that car. That said, you said you drove an m2 and didn't like it so that answers your question... get the m4 |

I have a M235i so it's close enough.
The interior is pretty crappy compared to the M3/M4. However, the interior cabin space is nearly identical from what I remember (I think the M2 will actually have larger space in some dimensions). I ordered a M3 cause I wanted a bigger car with a nicer interior and better options. Obviously it's quite a bit more money, though. |

Hey there fellow Aussie.
Test drive both back to back. I did just that expecting to choose the M2 but as another responder above posted, there is more technology a better interior and superior motor in the M4. It won me over. Plus it has the 'animal' in it, which I like. And there are some great deals around. The gap may only be $25k, or $300 a month financed...

Great advice
Thanks to everyone for their thoughts, and the winner is M4.
I think it is a real M car, and the M2 I think was built to a price as an entry to the M cars. I also think there will be a M2 upgrade in the form of a performance edition in the future. Will test drive M4 and M2 though back to back as suggested. Thanks again. |

I was on the same boat but only reason I decided not to get the M2 was there's no carbon fiber or lightweight parts. Everything is steel. M2 is so special and considered as future classic but I just like so much about carbon fiber driveshaft, cf roof, cf brace in the M4!
I still don't regret I picked up ZCP M4 instead of M2 |

m2 also does not have the top end punch of the s55 in the f8x. m2 dct lacks individual adjustable shift logic.

Posing this question exclusively on the F8x board is like MSNBC polling it's viewers on Trump's likability. Broaden your audience.

I would personally rather have an M2 than an F83 . No one wants to get in and out of the back seat of an M4 anyway even if it is bigger than the M2's. For practicality the M3 really wins here. It's all about preference here and to say the M2 isn't a real M car is disingenuous. What makes an M car isn't the trim or the mirrors or a memory button on the steering wheel; it's the dynamic behavior of the car. Your car looks great, btw. OP, my thoughts incase this helps you...
http://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1441224 To summarize, if my budget is strictly 60k or less I would always get a M2. Over 60k, I would get the M3.

Just FYI..
There will be such a car as an M2 CS/ Competition fairly soon. At a similar price point to an M4, that would make for a difficult decision process. |

I have been hearing this as well. M2 just doesn't have the cooling or brakes necessary for track action. M4 holds its own at the track. If that is important to you, then your choice is clear.
