Get it heli-coiled/time-serted by a pro.

Any reputable shop can handle installing a helicoil. I recommend calling around and shopping price. You should buy the part and have them install it.

Some shops won't do it, but keep trying until you find a winner.

Helicoil for sure. I would install it myself but if you don?t have a lot of time wrenching on cars, have any good local shop do it. Worst part is making sure all of the metal shavings come out. I would suggest burning through 2-3 bottles of the factory oil after the install of the helicoil but before you fill it back up to get all of the shavings out and a magnetic drain plug. Also, on the 3rd liter of oil, put the plug in to make sure it holds oil before you drain it out and make sure there are no leaks. Helicoil are sold at a local Fastenal, look them up, they will have or can order them in 1 day. Good luck

My concern would be whether the larger pieces are still in there. You might want to go fishing in there with your thin automotive magnet, maybe bend it close to the end, perhaps to 45 degrees.

Pan is aluminum so I don't think a magnet is gonna help much

I'd drop the whole oil pan to be sure but that's me.

Maybe also use one of those oil drain valves...i hated that stupid hex drain plug, so fragile.
