What would you do? F80 VS 1M
So I have an interesting dilemma.
My father owns a 2011 1M. The car has about 20k miles on it. He's potentially selling it because he never drives it, and he's reaching that retirement age. I own an F80 with the same 20k miles. The values of the two cars are about the same however my car will continue to depreciate while the 1M should hold its value very well and it may actually be sought after in 5-10 years. Would you guys sell your F80 for the 1M? I'd then treat the 1M as a pure weekend car and get myself a Jeep or something for daily duties. The dilemma is the fact that the F80 is just better than the 1M in every imaginable category lol. All Opinions/Thoughts welcome |

I'd say it's all about perspective. If you see your cars as investments then it would probably make a clear sense to make the trade. But in terms of car to car comparison, I think the f80 is a better all rounded car. 1m is definitely a hell of a car, but f80 is much more composed. If you're looking for a pure track car, I'd consider the trade.
If you have the option to own both, I'd say definitely buy the 1m. If you had to choose one, personally i wouldn't do it.. |

Tough choice OP, not for which is a better car, but for long term value.
I would try to keep both personally. The 1M will definitely hold value better than the M3. But I wouldn't want to drive it over the M3, lol. But if I HAD to pick one, I'd keep the 1M. It's the better long term strategy. Get something regular, drive it on the weekend and PRAY you don't get into any accidents. Otherwise you're screwed.

Can you refinance the 1M for a longer term that will make the payments affordable?

Theoretically you already made this decision once before. For the price you paid for your F80, you could have gotten a 1M. Why change the decision just because it's a car owned by a family member?
I would just keep the F80 and move on with life.

I went through this decision when I decided on an F80 last year. My buddy offered his pristine 1M with 4K miles to me for 60K. I love the 1M - it is a fun car. Ultimately thought I wanted a DD and I knew I would be loath to drive the 1M daily as it is rare, I would worry about etc. Add new car warranty and tech on the F80 (as a DD) and it sealed the deal for the F80. I do miss that 1M, however.
GL! If there is a way to keep it in the family and keep the F80, that would be ideal...

Maybe a few hundred a month and he has access to drive it. When you're ready you take it, minus the payments already made.

Exactly, so why not hang on to the 1M, and pick up a nice F8x in a few years when it will have depreciated even more

I assume your father knows is a rare car with value, I bet he'd be willing to cut you a deal to keep it in the family especially with a car loving son. I know I'd do that for my boy. Frankly maybe the best bet is to convince dad to keep it and just make sure he's willed it to you or agrees to discuss selling it to you when it works for your family financially.

I agree with you f80 is a better car. I personally think the is for hardcore BMW fans only, because there are a lot of similarly priced used cars that are better sports cars
Agree with the others. Work something out with your father to keep in the family |
