Programming a new key?

Hey guys does anyone have a definitive guide to programming a new key from the dealer?

I tried everything I found online and no luck.

Thanks

Only the dealer can program it to your car.

Where did you get the key from? Our keys don't need programming. Can have up to 4 at once. If you ordered the key through a dealer just put it next to the steering column and it will pick up and start working. If you bought a key online it's a paperweight

Once you unlock the door with the good key, keep it outside of the car. Then you can code the new key like in the youtube videos.

Thanks guys, it's straight from the dealer.
I tried starting the car with the good key then putting the new key to the steering column and still nothing happens.

I'll let the dealer sort it out next visit.

1. Leave the original key outside of the car (there is no need for the original key for this procedure)
2. Place the TIP of the NEW key against the right side of the column in between the lines where the picture of the key is
3. Keep pressing the start/stop button while holding the key there. You may have to press it numerous times. I have had some work with a few presses, some others took about 20-30 presses.

This process worked for me; just to elaborate to each step because it took me several tries and the detailed combo that finally worked for me was:

1. Leave the key that works outside the range of the car, I left mine about 20 feet away.

2. "The tip" was important, key must be perpendicular to the steering column. Not flat against it, but with the short edge touching and pointing out. Bit counterintuitive because I thought more surface area would be better, but it wasn't.

keys are programmed at BMW and are tied to a vin.
you can't buy a key from bmw unless its vin matched.

if one of your keys is not working correctly then take it to your BMW dealer and they will dial you in no problem

as far as getting a key or programing a key from a non BMW store that I can't comment on

expensive! shameful plug but you can hit up PARTS@STBMW and Britney will give you a killer quote on a new one. Just know you will need to provide proof (shouldn't be a issue) of ownership before you can buy a new key

Thank you guys for these directions--I will try again when I get home, b/c I was going bat crazy trying to program my new key last night!!

Picked up my new M3 two weeks ago, and was only given 1 key, as the dealership lost the other one (or at least that is what they said). They sent me a new 2nd key last night fedex. Of course no one told me I would have to do anything once I received the new key. Sure enough, new key no workie. Check online, watch YT, and the damn thing still never registered.

I will be sure to "just use the tip" of the key and keep pressing the start button. Hopefully it works!

does programming it yourself enable comfort access as well? or do you have to go to the dealer if it is comfort access?

That's a factory feature, so if your car has it then it will work automatically with a successfully programmed key.
