Most Supra owners on SF wouldn't mind a V6. They actually prefer that to the idea of using BMW's I6.

The switch from an I6 to a V6 seems to have worked for the Nissan GTR. I don't think the target audience will care what powers it if it has the right performance/$.

Probably true, and the BMW will have an I6 if anyone really cares enough.

I suspect that you are correct

The number of people who care about the distinction between an I6 and a V6 are probably limited to a small subset of a very small subset of the most rabid enthusiasts

How are the turbos packaged? A hot-v configuration would be nice, like Audi's new turbo V6.

At 3.5 liters with "only" 415HP for the Lexus I'd suspect this would be a detuned version of this engine. I'd think they could coax a bit more HP out of this engine for the Supra (if they're using it for that car).
Nissan is getting 600HP out of a 3.8L TT V6 after all.

That doesnt sound too far off the conservative estimates on the B58 which is ~335HP for a 3.0l twin scroll turbo

No question there should be plenty of room for improvement post production

I suspect this engine is destined for the base Supra. To compete with what it will be competing with (Corvette, Porsche Cayman S and above/lower-level 911s, upcoming Mazda RX, etc.), it will need to be at least a six -- and the car won't sell without a new powertrain, particularly considering the slim new-engine pickings that exist at Toyota.

The real question is if this motor will be the basis for the hybrid version of the Supra, of which at least one mule is verified by sound to exist. If so, that car could be a game changer -- basically an NSX for roughly half the price.

The engine was designed for efficiency but Toyota did increase power overall. You have to remember what the LS was designed to be. People often see turbo motors are instantly look for crazy power. The LS currently uses toyotas small v8, which is used in tundra and land cruiser as well.

NOW we're talkin'.

Huh. Note that this 3.5L engine won't have turbos ... and the NA hybrid version may develop less power than the twin-blower. And: an electric motor inside what likely amounts to a modified ZF8?

Strike my NSX-for-half-the-price comment ... I just hope that hybrid version's shift box also adds a dual clutch.

Using a hybrid lets Toyota show off its green tech and demonstrate to a different audience that electric motors don't just have to be for improving fuel economy.

Evidence is mounting about Toyota’s new sports coupe, possibly called the Supra, using a hybrid powerplant. The latest piece of evidence has Toyota Europe president and CEO Johan van Zyl all but confirming to Auto Express that a performance car with electrical assistance is on the way.

“We already have some sporting models with hybrid powertrains on the Lexus side. But on the Toyota side, I think we will find that if we can have a World Endurance Championship racing car with hybrid technology, it can happen on a road car,” van Zyl told Auto Express. “I do not have any doubt whatsoever that in the longer-term future there will be a real Toyota sports model using electrification.”

Toyota’s latest TS050 endurance racer combines a 2.4-litre V6 and an electric motor both axles. The result is a total output of 987 horsepower. Don’t expect something this potent in the Supra, though.

Previously, there were unsubstantiated rumours about the revived Supra using a hybrid powertrain, but now stories have corroborated the theory. For example, the sports coupe has the distinctive whine of an electric motor in a video from the development at the Nürburgring.
